Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this uneven rotor wear? There's vibration in the steering wheel during braking at 40-70mph.

Sorry, don't know what is causing that but I have the opposite wear pattern. No unusual braking but I'm not getting rotor wear on the outer 3/8's of inch on the rotor and it's also only on the left front.

OP that's some serious scarring. Either the pad is worn and needs to be replaced. The pad could also have picked up maybe a contaminant and it embedded into the pad causing the surface marks. I suggest bring it to the dealer or an Indy shop and have it diagnosed

Thanks. The steering wheel shake is slowly getting worse. I picked up a set of Zimmermann rotors and Akebono pads.

Probably tires are out of balance. When I worked at Sears Automotive I can recall a high amount of complaints with steering wheel vibrations and alot of if it was because of wheel weights coming off. Also, when was the last time you had an alignment done? Once the tire has improper wear even after getting the tires rebalanced and rotated in alot of cases will not fix the vibrations because of the improper tire wear. And the last thing I can think of is worn tierods, LCA's and bushings

My experience with a bad (warped) rotor was a pulsing of the brake pedal when braking. I concur with the above posting that suggests tire(s) out of balance or perhaps alignment. Typically, this problem is a function of vehicle speed and that seems to be what you've described.

Looks like your brake pad has picked up contaminants. You can start by sanding off the upper surface and finish it off with a clay bar.

OP I have the same wear pattern on both front rotors 2014 535d 28k miles.Have you found a cause for the wear pattern.

When you say steering wheel vibration during braking tells me warped rotors. If you were experiencing steering wheel vibration during normal driving with no braking then I would suspect tire out of balance or suspension component issue. Just went through same issue with my 535i. New rotors and pads and all is well! Also went through this issue with my E60 550i. OE BMW rotors like to warp, stepped it up with both rotor replacements, zimmerman rotors and stoptech this time around.
