550i Exhaust Tips Closed
I have 550i and I just have found that two out of four exhaust tips are closed. I have talked with engineer and said it automatically opens when rpm goes high, so I tested it and it did not opened.
Does anyone know why those are closed and can it be open? Will it make any sound better? (sorry for poor english) Last edited by ksh8759; 10-18-2010 at 04:54 PM.. |

Normally they do open after a certain speed or RPM. I have a friend who have actually seen it happen in front of his eyes on a 750 il. Give it another re-check and if it still doesn't open then you should take it to service.
Maybe it opens on higher speeds than you have actually checked... just speculating |

Probably works the same as the RS4's with a vacuum pipe, just blank it off and it will stay open.

Don't rush to lock the valve open. I'll have to try and dig around but we had a similar valve on the E60 550 and I recall some folks locked it open and they were no pleased with the exhaust note at lower rpm's.

If you are starting a cold motor, it may be staying closed as to heat up the cats. Once warm it will prob open with higher rpm.

I wouldn't panic either, the operation will depend on the management strategy. Could be much more complex than previous models, so we may need to learn a bit more of the function.

In the past, NA engines closed one port to increase backpressure and in-turn, low end torque. Well these FI engines have gobs of torque at the low end already.
5'series vac tube works in reverse as a 3'series. A 3'er will suck it shut at low speeds and release at high speed (MPH, not engine load). A 5'er will 'suck it open' at high speed, so disconnecting that vac line won't do a damn thing but keep it shut full time. That's why I used 2 zip ties per side to strap that hole open . Exhaust tone is a bit more aggressive than stock at low speeds and take off, or as aggressive as you are going to get with the factory resonators, bigass H pipe and TUV Exhaust mufflers

Is it really true disconnecting it won't simply one the flap valve on a 5 series? |

It opens under full throttle and stays open alittle bit after that. Its closed most of the time to keep to smog level restrictions I spoke to a experienced worker in the service department about that

The exhaust actuators open the secondary exhaust valves during high load. You will not be able to see the valves open when sitting still, revving the engine. There's not enough engine load, to generate sufficient vacuum to pull the actuator valves' diaphragm.
You can check if they really open, by seeing carbon build up on the exhaust tip. My E70 35i has the same setup. |
