F10 sudden power loss and Kaput?
Hi all
I have a modest 14 plate BMW 5 series 2.0 D So, I was accelerating aggressively early this morning when my car lost all power. In the momentary interlude between attempting to avoid the looming Artic and coming to a dead standstill, I noticed a quick “Drivetrain. Possible to continue your… etc”. I coasted to a very well placed lay-by and the car would not start at all. After several attempts it fired up, however there was a very large amount of shanking of said car. Shut it down and gas it towed. Would not start at garage where it awaits a diagnostics. Any ideas? There were no further drive train or any other warnings on the dash after the first warning. All was clear. It’s a Diesel engine. |

I’m trying to decipher what “shanking” sounds like. Looking at the hot issues you have spark, fuel, bearings and timing chain. If I was to guess on shanking I would throw out timing chain issue slipping or stretched because bearings generally let the engine run and the other items would not make noise.
If the timing chain slips you’d stall because timing is off. If the timing slips and you run the engine you can destroy the entire top end - cams, lifters, valves, etc. Good luck. I hope others have a different prognosis. If you have more info it will help. |

Thank you for the replies. Shanking does mean shaking! Either that or it’s a Freudian slip
I didn’t want to bias any replies but I feel the same, probably the timing chain. I also thought maybe it could be the High Pressure Fuel Pump. The recovery truck driver suggested a coil. |

If shanking is shaking then it might now be the timing chain. I would think it’s related to firing so fuel, air and spark is where I would start. Hpfp could be the culprit too.

Shaking on a diesel won't be "sparks or coils". Injection pump maybe.
The fact it won't now start, does indicate a possible timing jump/chain issue. Particularly if a sudden failure when working hard. |
