That's too much of a difference (3.5%) front to rear. You should stay around 2% at the very most. If you have X-Drive you must stay within 1% or plan on a new transfer case. 255/40 would be better on the front.

https://itstillruns.com/tire-size-af...r-4926157.html

This is to calculate compatible sizes:

https://tire-calc.com/

This is just the comparison between front and rear:

https://tire-calc.com/comparison/255...nd-285-35-r19/

Without comparing to the stock staggered sizes (245/40/19 & 275/35/19), your speedometer/odometer may also be off by a fair amount.

I've read somewhere on this forum that having a significant diameter difference between front and back can cause ABS and anti-skid / traction control issues too since rotational differences are used to actuate both. I tend to agree that 3% is too much difference, and also in my humble opinion the front tires will look too thin / small compared to the back.

The 30mm difference is the same as the stock staggered set; 245 up front and 275 in the rear.

To keep the tyre width he would have to have a 255/40 up front instead of 255/35. Having wider tyre out back would need a lower aspect ratio than the one up front. Yes, it will mess with the ABS & traction control; I forgot to mention that. Can also induce squirrely handling.

Im going to put them on as they are and see for now . . .

Question is do i go up a size at the front then or down a size at the back ?

These were been run on an m4 for a fair few months and he had no issues?

What if I went 235/40/19 up front that's still within limits going off the calculator

When the rears need changing then down size them to 265/35/19 or 275/35/19

I agree. That's what I was saying too. I meant thin with respect to the height of the tyre between wheel rim and tread. To clarify for OP so he is not guessing at numbers, tyre sizes are all about math. A 255/35/19 tyre means this:
tyre width (across the tread): 255mm
diameter of tyre hole: 19 inches
Ratio of tyre height (from wheel rim to tread) to tyre width: 35%.

Therefore, and as you already stated, he can keep the rear tyres and change the front ones for 255/40/19.

Thanks everyone for the information it was taken on board and I picked up a bargain set of pilot sport 4S for the front at 255/40/19 to match the rears now so shouldn't have any issues

(Not sure why it's cut off half of the top and bottom on each image)

You've already done it so this is just a reminder for others. The tread pattern needs to be the same front to rear or squirrely handling can be induced with different grip at each end.
