OK to use 528i springs on 535i?
Hey friends,
I have a 2014 535i xDrive M Sport. My rear passenger side spring took a dump and cracked. Noticed this when I heard a loud clunking. I have already taken the old strut out and am about to order a pair of replacement springs to do both sides, but it seems like the springs are different for the 550/535/528i? Considering the weight of the car is similar to the 528i, am I ok ordering springs for the 528i? Is there even a difference? These springs are listed as being compatible with both the RWD 528i and xDrive variant. It seems like they all have different part numbers. I don't drive fast or track this car, its pretty much just a weekend car to slowly drive to the bar so I don't care about losing a bit of performance as long as the ride is still similar to the stock springs. Part for reference: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/154174700370...53.m2749.l2649 Thanks |

Ride quality will change. There's a 250lb difference between the 528 and 535. That's not insignificant. It's not like 535 springs are expensive or hard to find, why bother?

Thanks for the reply
Looking at some sites like this one that have OEM parts, the springs are listed as compatible for the 535/528 and GT cars but not 550i: https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...IFJlc3VsdHM%3D Definitely a PIA to figure out what works and what doesn't, but I guess since this site says that the spring will work with both I will get it here UPDATE: Digging deeper, it seems like the ones I originally found are OEM. The part number is the same across multiple manufacturers and as per the link above and other websites/guides, it is compatible with the 535s/528s: 33536794653 Bilstein, Kilen, Lesjfors, Roc and Triscan all manufactured various springs for BMW over many years but they are all the same "OEM part". This digging is probably what made the seller slap 528i on the listing, they didn't want to figure it out Might be helpful for someone that stumbles on this post later on Last edited by sicamore; 08-23-2021 at 04:03 PM.. |

Hey - I'm currently going through this with my rear springs on '11 535xi m-sport with EDC... this has been an annoying process for me due to the lack of aftermarket options that retain OEM height.
The same side broke right at the bottom pad and was making weird noises. I actually ended up going with GetBMWPARTS to special order a spring set from Germany at about $144 a spring. I bought both sides after researching and working with several BMW parts departments. The springs are specific to each vehicle and it's one of those things that requires them to do VIN lookup. I initially bought springs from a 550i RWD to put on but decided against it b/c I found out the donor was not m-sport (paid a cheap price for all 4). What's interesting is some of the portals show a direct fit BMW spring but the department indicated another part that shows it doesn't fit. Anyway I worked with GetBMWparts and got the following set with part number 33536786657 shipped out. https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...ng-33536786657 Now I'm dealing with damaged shipping - they showed up with deep scratches on the top part. they sent another set that showed up with even deeper scratches. I'll have to paint over I guess I'm ultimately going to be changing these myself, curious to hear how the process went for you??? |
