535i vs 335i

Hey guys, Might be a silly question. When looking at the 335i vs 535i (n55), why is it that the 335i performs better via dyno numbers? I would assume because it is the same engine they should produce the same output. What am I missing here?? What's the kicker? Does the 335i have different internals?

Basically, if I found a salvaged 335i what should I strip from the engine so the 535i produces the same output?

Obviously, there is a weight difference but looking only at dyno output?

I could be wrong, but I believe the engine is the same besides some routing of the intake and intercooler pipes. Besides that I think the difference could be just the stock software tuning, where they market the 335 as more of a sports car, and the 535 as more of a luxury vehicle. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If the engines are the same but one does better on a dyno...I would look at what's different between the output from the engine and how it is transferred to the wheels that are on the dyno rollers.

Which makes me ask (cause I don't know) what is the gearing for the final drive in each vehicle? That could be part of the difference.

As mentioned above the entire drivetrain will play into this along with software.
But the most difference is what model N55 you are comparing.
Below is the wiki link for the N55 but that still leaves 5 variations not including the Alpina and ///M versions.

Makes sense...

Thinking about the software, wouldn't MHD or BM3 and other tunes solve this?? If this hold true, then the delta for the power output once tuned is focused strictly on the drivetrain?

What mods would need to be applied to the drivetrain to be comparable if not more capable than the 335i power output?

The 5 series is heavier than the 335 in general. Feels like a boat

Heavier car. Geared towards different characteristics. Same engine. Tune a 535i and all is good

Pre-LCI was described this way yes, especially with the newly introduced electric power steering in the 2011 F10. After using a 335i M-sport in the BMW Drivers course, my LCI diesel was refreshing to come back to and not like a boat. Mine has better steering feel. I believe they tweaked the steering and suspension even more for the G30. Wonder how much better a 535d F10 LCI M-sport is.
