New 850W Radiator Fan Fault Codes
I am doing my second phase of restorating my neglected 535i F10 and in the latest pile of parts I bought a new waterpump, thermostat, aluminum micky mouse flange and a new TYC radiator fan. There were no major issues with those parts on my car with the exception of a slight vibration from the fan at really high speeds, its just that I want to be ahead of issues and since my F10 is now more than 10 years old (MY2014 LCI). I just wanted to be safe.
The shop installed all of the parts successfully and when they started the car they noticed 2 issues. The thermostat was closed and when it opened it jumped to 99% open. they explained it should have been a gradual increase rather than this sharp jump to max open. And the other issue is the fan where it threw 2 codes: 1A2408: Electric Fan, self diagnosis, interval stage 3, fan fault with restricted motor operation 1A2508: Electric Fan, self diagnosis, interval stage 4. series fan fault The shop reinstalled the old fan and both issues of the thermostat and the codes for the fan went away. so they suspect either the fan is not suitable for the vehicle or that its faulty. I did some digging and suspect that the original fan is 600w meanwhile the one I bought based of RealOEM part number is 850w. and I found one post where an X5 had the same codes where they replaced the fan relay and that fixed the issue. Usually when they are changes to parts or update to any system in the vehicle, RealOEM is good to mention some notes regarding that, but in this case there are no notes at all. Now I am in partway between refunding my new fan or trying to replace the relay in the trunk (Picture attached) and test. Any one can shed any light on this? Car VIN: WBA5B1C55ED475444 New fan Part number: 17427647652 |

Update:
So, since I did not get any reply on the thread, my best shot was to try to replace the relay. That was fine since it wasn't that expensive; around 15$ from BMW. We installed the new relay but all was the same. The fan threw the same codes. This meant that the new fan was faulty and needed replacing. I will ship it back to get it replaced by the warrenty and see how things go from there. I just wanted to keep updating this thread just incase someone needed it in the future. |

Sounds like fan may be faulty. Not sure which model you have but 535 and 550 uses 850W. You can even install M5 fan as well. M5 fan is 1000W. Our factory relay can handle 1000W so it should not be a problem for you if you are installing 850W.
