F11 EDC question
Hello bimmer experts.
Both my rear EDC shock absorbers have gone bad, so after a while of contemplating I decided to get them restored via a shock absorber repair company. Now the restoration has unfortunately been delayed and I will need to drive my car. Question: Can I mount regular shocks and drive around with them for a few weeks without getting any issues? Just until I get my original absorbers back from repair. I get that a fault code will appear that the EDC or suspension would be faulty, but will it affect the driving any way - say engine derate or limited speed or whatever could happen or can I drive it around if I can live with the fault code for a week or two? Cheers |

Should be fine, people remove the EDC dampers when they see their price and go conventional.
At this point are you saving any money by waiting on the slow pokes to rebuild your originals? I mean if your having to buy another set of shocks and pay or do the install 2x plus the cost of the damper rebuild. Would it be simply cheaper to buy a new set of EDC dampers? A new damper is $628 from FCP euro. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...hoCFmEQAvD_BwE I wouldn't mess with a rebuild. |

Hi - thanks for replying.
Not really saving any money by doing so - correct. But it's my only option as the repair shop have already started and I need to use the car. Price for restoration approx 600 $ for both and I have purchased the cheapest regular shocks for about 100$ for 2. So still cheaper than replacing both EDC dampers. My decision of getting them rebuild, is because the car has about 200 k miles on it, and my hope was that a rebuild would last maybe (hopefully) 50-100k more, and then I would probably be looking at replacing the car with another. So that's the explanation. 👍 |

Loaner? Rental? Uber? Lift? Mass transit (bus/taxi/subway), co-worker, friend, family member? Are any of the aforementioned modes of transportation that can suffice in this short interval of repair?
My question would be the difference in spring rate for the EDC suspension vs the conventional? I'm sure the spring rate for the EDC shocks is less since the electronic damping of the oil filled EDC shocks facilitates more suspension dynamics than a regular shock & strut setup. Plus, are there different components used in the suspension setup between these two systems that you are overlooking? You've only focused on the cost of the conventional shocks...but are the shock mounts and other hardware pieces the same?
