Can light mods give you the passion?

So while I like my latest car, an 18 m240i, I don't feel any passion for it. I rarely look back at it and when I do, don't linger at it, I don't want to hand wash it, and would rather just put in through the auto wash. While I enjoy driving it, I don't really crave driving it, like I have other cars...

As an enthusiast, I miss that passion for my car. I've been here before. Back in the day I had a 1990 300Zx that I loved...I went from that car to a 1994 mx6 that I liked but never loved...and when I got a 2003 350Z from the mx6 that brought the passion back

In this case I am looking at making moves to another car that will bring the passion back
like the M2, the c63S, f type r etc
all of these moves would involve serious financial loss (since i just got the m240i)

but I wonder if instead light mods might give me the passion for the car I miss...

as a start I was thinking of a mild drop and adding 19's (inspired by another fellow on 2addicts who did this and his car looks amazing)

But I am wondering if that will do it? Can relatively minor mods give you the passion for a car that you really had none for from the get go?

From experience? No. Not lasting interest anyway. Find one that actually makes you FEEL something and go from there. Life is too short to drive soulless cars.

Think I'm going on 8 years in my 1er and I still look back at it every time I park.

Honestly, having driven a 370z (lowered, wheels and exhaust) I think I know the feeling you're referring to when you fell in love with the 300zx and the 350z. It's the NA power when you put your foot down, not having to wait for the boost to build, and the lower sitting position.

Lowering on 19s for the 2er isn't a huge drop, but will be noticed. However, that power delivery of the vq motor just isn't there. You'd need to add a jb4 at least just to get the power you crave, otherwise the stock b58 is too linear. The vq35 and vq37 give that punch of power which is a very nice feeling.

After adding the JB4 to my m240, I noticed the power difference immediately. Adding the sport cat dp and exhaust brought back that feeling I enjoyed in the 370z. Oh and coding out the fake exhaust note inside. Unfortunately, it might take another 1-2k, but you can get a better driving experience out of the 2er.

You'll know it when you drive the right car(s)
What else dd you test drive before you bought the 240? I'll be car shopping again soon & want to make sure I make the right buy so extended test drives will be in order once I shorten my list.

Totally understand how you feel...prior to this M5, had the V10 M6 which I handwashed and waxed all the time, lightly modded, loved driving and wouldn't even turn on the radio most of the time because of the V10 sound. This car is faster, but heavier and just not as fun. Maybe you should try a tune and see how that makes you feel? Increasing the power and noise might change your mind.

The XDrive part of it could also be affecting it as combining all that traction with the easy power from the B58 would sanitise it a little.

It's a real M car, but not with a "real" M engine. The M2 CS should be correcting that. The M240i even more so is not an M car, it's an M Performance car. Confusing. It needs to be modded IMHO to get that little bet of extra something to make it special. I agree tough, M3/4 is the way to go for that feeling the OP might be looking for. I still do the look back everyday.

I understand the 350z thing. Mine was beautiful to look back at. What about a C7? I love how mine looks at every angle. The acceleration and sounds are brutal. It’s addictive to drive. But I still look back at my 135is, so go figure.

It'll be like lipstick on a pig. If you want a car for passion, get a car with passion.

The usual good formula is rwd, NA, stick, makes good "real" noise, and most importantly handles well. HP usually isn't even a big factor and looks are subjective.

Oh I test drove lots of cars...
my top 2 were
f type coupe R AWD
2015 C63 coupe

the f type coupe was ruled out as too impractical (I share my car with my GF) but I loved it...it made me giggle

I liked the NA and sound of the C63, but the C63 transmission lag ruled it out, coming from a manual I needed a highly responsive manu-matic which the ZF8 is...

had a c7, not my cup of tea, actually prefer the m240i...had no passion for the C7...it felt too crude for me...

Exactly what I was going to say. When I first drove my E46 M3 manual I fell in love, and enjoyed it every day till I sold it to buy something more practical.

That was an F20 125i LCI. During the test drive, I enjoyed the car and it was perfect for what I needed, but I never loved it. I never felt like I needed to drive it the 2 years I owned it. It just did it’s job really well.

Hence I’m currently shopping for a V8 M3
