Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06's don't last?

Hi everyone,

Loving my Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06’s, but finding they aren’t lasting long!

Installed 11/2015 and the W of the DWS indicator is practically gone.

Thoughts on how long they should last under ‘normal’ driving?

Tires on my other cars have routinely lasted 4-5 years.

How much do you drive, how do you drive? All variable.

I have DWS on other cars and have been very happy with their performance.

Driving style is 'spirited', but hasn't changed from other cars.

I've put approximately 13k miles on the tires.

Should be more like 40k I feel... :|

The DWS06 nis a great all season tire. It has a 50,000mi treadwear rating. Regardless 4-5 years of tire life on a RWD BMW is completely unreasonable. On a Civic? Sure, not on one of these cars.

As is industry standard the treadwear rating assumes regular rotations, balances and alignments on a car that is in good mechanical condition. A number of things can shorten life span, most of all staggered wheels that prevent rotations.

In staggered setups treadwear rating is halved, so 25,000mi in that case.

How much tread is left in 32nds? The DWS06 starts out with 10/32 tread depth.

10-15k on the rear axle of a staggered BMW fitted with sporty tires is a reasonable aspiration.

I've used these tires plenty on previous cars, and I can relate in that they don't last much at all. The price point and handling always suckered me back, but then again the price is probably why one shouldn't expect them to last much.

Car is at a body shop and wheels/tires at a wheel repair shop.

Will ask the shop to measure. Hopefully I hear back tomorrow.

But is the price point actually that good? I'm not sure...

Michelin AS3+ is available and gets great reviews on tirerack and other sites. Trying to decide on DWS06s or the AS3+ myself.

In the past, the price difference was at least $70 - $90 cheaper than Michelin or Pirelli per tire.

I've used DWS and love the tire.

with staggered set up you're lucky to get 15K miles out of it especially on rears. Front should give you all 50k as advertised.

It's my fronts that are worn.

Wonder if it's the xDrive and/or heat or weight up front giving me less than 15k?

I got about 30k miles out of my previous Hankook K12s. I now have Michelin A/S3+s. I'm sure I'll get at least the same. Yes I have a staggered setup.

Sounds like your suspension is hammered and or you need an alignment then.

Driver’s side front tire measures at 4/32nd’s center tread and goes to 3/32nd’s towards both edges in approximately a year and a half or 12k miles. Normal?

Tire rack stated they’d reimburse a prorated difference of tire cost if 3/32nd’s or under. Not sure how the 4/32nd's center tread depth will factor in; probably result in a denial? Need to call back.

Thoughts?

you need to take it back to tire shop who put them on for you. They should give you prorated discount on new set.

i've known someone who got new tires on a fraction of the cost. No this is not normal even for xDrive due to rear bias of the models.

Just my two cents but tires are like an eraser. They last as long as the type and amount of use you apply to them. On a massively heavy vehicle such as your 750 with spirited driving they are not going to last as long as on the same care without the spirited driving or a much lighter car with spirited driving. I'm lucky to get anything over 10K on any set of tires that I buy and I'm completely happy with that. I pay for a level of grip and road handling that I want. I recognize my driving style with never get anywhere near a tread wear rating. If I was puttering around like "driving miss Daisy" and got poor tread wear I might have an issue. You have to understand that so much affects the wear of your tires. Most factory alignment settings have a huge amount of Toe-in which is basically scrubbing off your tread as you drive to provide the average driver with a very stable straight tracking car. I take all my vehicles to a private shop and have that toe removed and run zero toe or an absolute bare minimum of toe in. (Warning this will make your car hunt like a dog tracking a fox) Our vehicles also have a large amount of negative camber which improves cornering but wears out the insides of the tires for most people that don't corner hard enough to compensate for the camber. There are plenty of tires out there that will get great tread life, only problem is they handle like crap. Now that doesn't mean the ride is poor but the compound is very hard and that means reduced grip. All I'm really saying is what do you want your tires to do? The best handling maximum grip tires are going to ride like bricks and howl like a banshee. The best tread wear tires may ride like your on pillows and be quite as a mouse but first hard turn and you'll be pulling out your phone calling a tow truck. Some times we are told that there are these magical items that can do everything. It's just not the case with tires. I think the Conti DWS is an excellent tire but like everything in life you need to balance your expectations.

Well isn't this annoying...

Safety hazard, no doubt.

While most / all will say toss them now, any thoughts on how many more miles can I squeeze out of them, 1k, 2k?

Upsetting the rest of the tread looks so good. :|

My tire wear experience - 328XI

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd comment for anyone researching.

I've had Continental ExtremeContact DWS for about 34K miles and just shy of three years. I like these tires for their low road noise and good handling in rain, snow, and ice. But I think these tires are soft and don't have the life expectancy due to all-wheel drive on the 328XI.

I was shown the tread wear as 3.85LF, 4.02RF, 2.94RR, 3.72LR. BMW doesn't recommend rotating tires and corrects uneven wear by alignment. My car seems to eat tires and I'm an easy driver. So, I get mine road-forced balanced and a four-wheel alignment annually - three times so far on these tires. They won't make the 50K as advertised by Continential, but I most likely buy another set of them.
