New engine for 2014 F10 for $13,000
My 535, with 50225 miles, was having misfiring problems and my scanner pointed to injector problems in #3 and #5 cylinders. As I do not have the tool to replace the injectors I took the car to the dealership. They concurred about the injectors and replaced all 6 that I supplied. (FCP euro parts). I was about to get it back when the #5 kept misfiring. They kept it and blamed the problem on extremely worn valve seals. I was quoted $8,000 to replace all the seals. When the shock wore off I contacted BMW NA and filed a complaint. Their solution was to replace the engine and pay 50% of the cost. ($13,000). Their tech department stated that the new engine has been designed to take care of some of the problems associated with the old one. Bad Valve seals, weak lower bearings, and a few other small things.
I did find out that 2010 - 2013 N55's had a service bulletin to replace the valve seals due to a deficiency in them. My car is a 2014, built 10/2013, but was not covered. I am unable to get an answer as to when the new improved valve seals were installed in the N55's. I am just writing this as an FYI for other N55 owners. Thanks for listening |

I agree with OnlyGerman. I've worked at BMW for 3 years now and during this time I've yet to see an N55 needing valve seals. N63s YES, TONS... but no N55.
what is more likely (based only on the fact that I've seen it happen) is that if the injectors had failed in the open position, the fuel could washdown the cylinder walls and this could in turn cause scoring on the walls. leading to burning oil and loss of compression.

something is weird. changed injector, it misfires and the next thing is to blame it on valve seals? isn't there are more logical things to clear first (ex. spark plugs). Did they do a compression test, boroscope?
$13k total to repair, and you pay $6.5k? |

also OP, if your valve seals were busted, you would have gotten black smoke on initial throttle up/ spool up (how much smoke would correlate to how long it's sat idling before accelerating, how hard your press down the accelerator, and how bad the valve seals are). Like when first roll when the light turns green. You'd be getting a plum of smoke then
