My wife drives my old '12 535i only a few times a week (has ~82K miles). She will get the battery warning the first time she starts the car then doesn't appear again until she drives the car a few days later. It only appears on initial start-up. The battery was replaced, a year and a half ago. I have a 3amp charger but bought the BMW 4amp (it was only ~$60) charger to see if that extra amp helps.

I've kept this Optimate 4 charger on my BMW motorcycles and occasionally on my F10 if it sits too long. It's a desulfating/conditioning charger/analyzer.

I've been starting to get this error more and more recently lately. I'm debating if I need to get a new battery or not. And from what I saw around the forums, there is some programming portion of installing a new battery (ugh)

Have you charged the battery up with a proper charger. If not then the message won't disapear as the car won't charge it properly.

I got this message yesterday and today what does it mean do I need to charge the battery or buy a new battery? What does the message mean for me the interior lights are not on when I open the car. Should I charge the battery or replace battery

Razfrankel,

Do you have Comfort Access door handles? If so that would be the first place I would look. Many Youtubes to help but basically you disconnect the comfort access and see if that resolves your drain.

Your car’s battery is deeply discharged…so it is shutting down systems to reserve battery power so that you hopefully won’t get stranded and the car not restart when you shut it down.

You need to find out why your battery is discharged. Is it due to its age? Or do you have something draining it?

This warning is trying to get your attention because you may end up stranded if you don’t check into what the cause is.

If it comes up again, press the OPTION button next to the iDrive controller and see if there is a selection that will take you directly to the embedded owners manual. It may offer some helpful description.

+1 to what Qsilver7 and Trian have said.

Something is causing an increased draw of power while your bmw is stopped.
Either something is not going to sleep correctly or something is grounding out.

Charge your car up with a battery charger, read the hexadecimal codes to see if it is identifying the circuit, and keep an eye on your battery state of charge.

For me, this issue occurred when I had a bad CA handle that would short out, but only when it rained and the car sat for a couple of days.

8 years is a good run!

I am suprised tho at how long these AGM batteries do seem to last, especially when people keep them on chargers periodically. I've read many posts where people have had 10 yr old batteries. I'll be replacing mine before winter this year as PM (I'm @ 9 yrs).

The Best Buy for me was the local BMW dealership. They wanted $233 (give or take a few dollars) + $10 core return charge…and this was for the BIG battery…the 105AH battery which is a 95R/H9 battery class size.

The local auto shops wanted $239-$325 for a comparable 95R/H9 battery and all of them were only 100 AH batteries except the one from Batteries Plus…but they were the most expensive that was $325.

So with my BMW CCA discount and core return…I was out the door from my local BMW dealership parts department for $227.

It was also fresh (purchased it in Jan/2023) and it came with a little baggy attached that had an extra little black elbow (for attaching the vent tube to the battery) plus an additional plug to use on the other side of the battery.

Call and check your local BMW dealership before dismissing them. If you can’t install it yourself…the the cost is going to be more.

Yeah, check with the dealer and see... I think BMW branded batteries are the best ones out there! I believe Exide makes them for NA market? Also check out Costco which carries Interstate batteries. They have been great as well.

You have a parasitic drain somewhere. The usual suspect is one (or more) of the comfort access door handles. Mine was the passenger, rear. Once replaced under warranty the problem was solved.

Where do you have your solar panel plugged in? Is it plugged into one of the cig lighters…or is the solar panel charger connected to the jump start terminals in the engine bay?
