It's an inherent problem with Bluetooth. I think the new Bluetooth 5.0 should fix that latency issue.

How does one play youtube videos on the iDrive screen? Some guidance would be appreciated. What else can be played other than movies on usb drive or DVD?

You need some sort of a media interface installed with a wifi airplay support to allow mirroring. Check out Bimmer-Tech:

There was no reason at all for BMW to install back in 2016 a BT that would cause delay. I had a 2016 Kia Optima with perfect working BT. It's just a shame!

Each car manufacturer has its own design choices and considerations. While it's unfortunate that you experienced delays with BMW's Bluetooth system, it's important to remember that different companies prioritize different aspects when developing their vehicles.

I had a 2013 Mercedes C Class and YouTube was fully in sync, it was working great. I had a 2004 Audi A4 before that and with an aftermarket bluetooth module and also not had any sync issues.

I now have a 2016 BMW F10 520D with the EntryNav head unit and it's horribly out of sync. Any solution for this? -- no, it is not normal coming from other cars

This is just playing a YouTube video on the iPad connected to the car speakers over bluetooth.

EDIT: I saw in another thread, someone solved it by connecting a bluetooth to 3.5mm adapter to the aux jack. Far from ideal as you lose a lot of functionality, but useful to know as a hack to workaround the delay. Anyone know of a better solution?
