Thrust Arm Bushing Upgrade

I noticed mine are starting to crack, and after all the other suspension mods I've done I figured I should probably upgrade them since they are probably under more stress than on a stock set up. Can anyone recommend any upgraded versions over stock, poly or otherwise?

Symptoms are a slight vibration at higher speeds and under hard braking... minor vibration and this is where I think it's coming from. Let me know. TIA.

I have a pair of the Turner Motorsports upgraded thrust arms with the aluminum inserts sitting at home waiting for me to install them. I got them through ECS. I did a bit of research before purchasing, and it seems like mostly positive reviews. I unfortunately don't have any first hand experience yet.

I upgraded my bushing to powerflex poly and it's a must in the upgrade list. It made a big difference by tightening the front end a lot. Less body roll in turns, better steering response and braking seems slightly improved. After install NVH is like stock.

here's a link to my thread a few months back with the necessary tools needed to do the job.

Nice review! That is the part I saw too, glad to see you did it.

You mentioned it helped in braking, in what way? I thought at first the shimmy I was feeling was the new rotors I put on but I think it's the slightly cracked and worn out thrust arm bushings...

I thought it was my rotors at first too. I replaced to new rotors and brake pads and still notice the vibration during braking. Did more research and people said to replace the thrust arm bushing. Not sure if you feel it during braking but I feel like there is a slight delay when pressing the pedal and when the brake bites. Since upgrading to poly I feel like that delay is gone.

When it comes to bushing it doesn't matter how low mileage your car is rubber deteriorate as it age. My car just hit 52,000 miles and it's a 2012.

how hard is it to remove the thrust arm? NEWTIS is no longer up since BMW shut it down.

It's easy, 6/10 job. Removing the thrust arm only require removing 2 bolts; one on steering knuckle and one on front subframe. If I remember correctly the torque spec are 75lbs on the subframe bolts and 95lbs on the knuckle.

Thanks! and then if I understand correctly, you just need to load the suspension when tightening right?

For rubber bushings, you have to load the suspension prior to doing final tightening. The reason is the bushing has to sit at rest height because it twists when the suspension travels up or down.

If you are installing polyurethane bushings, they rotate, not twist, so they don't need to be tightened with load. However, it is always good practice to do so because that fraction of a millimeter that the bolt can move within the holes should be tightened at rest height.

For x-drive models, the front axle needs to be unbolted from the hub to be able to remove the thrust arm, thus a new axle bolt needed.

Thanks guys! super helpful.

What do you think about this upgraded set from Turner? Comes with a new monoball joint too. Wonder if that should be replaced the same time.

Just a bit spendy if you only need the bushings... ha, look at what it says right on there "Suspension pre-load is no longer required when torquing the control arm hardware"

Haha did you order the whole set? Or just the bushing? I was doing some digging in the front axle today, thrust arm to subframe didn’t look that easy to get access to.

The whole set. I'm changing out my strut mounts so everything will be apart and should be a straight ahead replacement. Ill document it. Definitely want an impact gun for this job.

I wish there was a monoball option that didn't include the whole entire arm. Dinan doesn't have this option for our car.

There is. Turner sells the monoball by itself

Dinan makes it for 2012-2019 M5/M6. Not sure if they'll fit non-m cars.
