I just updated mine to 2021 from Ebay for $18. Pretty good deal imo. Let me know if you want more details.

If you can get your hands on a LIFETIME FSC code, then it will be easier to update since members tend to upload just the map files on a semi-regular basis. Do a search, there are posts out there (and one linked here possibly), that may help you get a key. Even if you HAVE to pay for a lifetime code...it's only that one time, and then your car will never ask you for a key next time it detects updated map files on your USB drive.

There are other options, some sites like bimmer*merica.com are legit (change the asterix to an A, this site may be prohibiting me from posting that specific hyperlink) But they're kinda pricey considering they don't offer lifetime codes, the most they offer is 1 year of codes for $99. Meaning that if BMW releases one update in one year or 4 in one year, you still will have paid the same price. So again, another gamble of sorts. But at least they are a legitimate business. It's just a shame they don't offer lifetime codes (prob to keep ppl coming back of course). Another option is to research and learn how to extract your own FSC code using a laptop and an OBD/USB cable. To be honest, I don't know if this method will yield lifetime codes, or single-use only. This is the maximum amount of information that I have floating around in my had regarding this topic lol.. I wish you good luck! |

I believe there is a thread here with someone offering free FSC codes.
Edit: Or you can try to create your own using this guide. It worked for me when I first bought my car a few years ago. 2021-1 North America NEXT map https://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1526116 |
