Nickco43's Cheap Used Car 2011 535XI Build Log

After searching for months I found a clean example of a 11 535xi! It seems like most owners after the warranty expires just let these thing go and they become POSs. I must have looked at 20+ cars up and down the Northeast. This repair shop that has been run by this same guy since the dawn of time was selling this car for local doctor. This shop owner was one of the nicest dudes I ever met and I wish I didn't live 1.5 hours away or I would start taking my cars to him.

98k Miles, clean title, no accident, new Michelin tires car. The PO did oil every 5k miles and the engine is spotless inside. Not bad for $9500! I am so excited to take delivery of the car later this week when my 21 year old brain can figure out the concept of a certified check. There are a few dings on the bumpers which I want to have resprayed. I am not sure if I will get the M sport ones or not. To me they are a bit too much for the elegance of the F10. I don't plan on tuning the car but instead retrofitting as much technology as humanly possible into it. I already have most of the NBT Evo bits from my E90s and I just bought a G30 touch screen last night. I also bought a 6WA cluster for $75 since this car is a 11/10 build date and it has the base cluster. Later this summer I want to retrofit, heated steering wheels, 4 zone climate, ACC, Kafas, ceramic controls, CA and a few more bits and bobs. I dropped $1300 on FCP last night and should have the car fully sorted in a week or two.

Stay tuned.

Nice buy. Love the oyster interior. Not bad for a 21 yr old. You can also finance through a credit union with low interest if you don't want to dump such a large sum at one time. I've had a great experience with penfed. Comfort seats and m-sport were on my list when I purchased mine. Got mine a year ago for the same $. It is amazing how owners dump these cars right at 100k. And the depreciation is crazy. But works out well for diy guys like us. Enjoy.

I am not really a fan of car payments. I paid for my E36 and my two E90s in cash. I think this will be the last car I will replace only after two years. I want to start saving for a house.

Good plan. I don't like to owe either. But my motto is why use my own cash when I can use someone else's

Hey Nickco43....I did most of the upgrades you listed....the wiring is going to be the most work and please do not believe others that state your wiring harness will support adding major functions to your F10...it's NOT true.

I just did a full retrofit in my F10 LCI using a pre-LCI M5 interior, which included running OEM wiring:

- Added full Merino leather dashboard
- Added 4-zone rear seat climate control (and wiring)
- Added 4-zone A/C Heater Housing Core Unit (and wiring) - requires dashboard removal
- Added 4-zone front dashboard stratification vents and controls (and wiring)
- Added B-pillar vents
- Added rear seat floor electric heaters (and wiring)
- Added heated steering wheel (and wiring)
- Added full Merino leather door cards
- Added rear door sun screens
- Added rear window sun screen (and wiring)
- Added rear heated seats (and wiring)
- Added full Merino leather font comfort seats
- Added full Merino center console
- Added individual wood trim
- Added Gentleman's switch
- Added Automatic high-beams (clock wheel change + coding)

I posted a few picture on post #13 at https://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1719598

Be glad to help when the time comes.....

Cheers

Such a beautiful interior. I did a CA retrofit on my blue E90 before and I fully understand how much work making a wiring harness is but I feel like the end result is so worth it. After everything is done including maintenance and retrofits I want to be about 15k USD into the car. Hopefully I can get everything done before the end of the summer as my internship opportunities were canceled due to corona. I feel like this will be the last time in my life were I will have the time to take on a large side project like this.

I got the car last night and made it home without issues. When I came back from getting plates it threw a check engine light.

I bought a new o2 sensor and I hope that the cat does not need to be replaced. The car was ran out of gas by the shop and dirty fuel ruined injectors 1 and 2. The PO footed the bill for them. When I took delivery of the car it had zero fuel in it. I kinda rushed the place because I wanted the car so I do not blame them. I think the misfires dirtied up the o2 sensors and cat.

Anyway, I gave the car a good wash and it is now up on jack stands.

The F10 is about one inch shorter than a W221 S class. Its a lot different from my E90s.

Wheels off and cleaned. All four wheels have a good amount of curbing. I think when the tires are worn I will get all new wheels. I put on new center caps and valve stem caps on the original wheels for now.

Since this car has been to NYC a few times there are a few hits on the front and rear bumpers. Good news is that they are mostly buffing out. I am going to polish the entire car lightly to remove most of the scratches in the paint.

I did a good look over the car and as expected the oil pan gasket is seeping a good amount and also I discovered that I picked up a nail in one of the tires.

Overall I am still happy with my purchase but the check engine light is a bummer. Now I can not get it inspected just yet.

Hey Nickco43, great start...post if you need help...it reads like you replaced the 02 sensor and it didn't fix your check engine light....ISTA-D and to a lesser degree, www.newTIS.info, are great resources to help get your issue resolved - and us!

Under the existent section the o2 sensor says no. But the cat is unknown. Hopefully it's not the cat. If it is I would definitely have the place you purchased fix it. Not sure if laws where you are. But I believe it's illegal for dealers to sell vehicles that can't pass emissions.
As far as your antenna code which is existent. It may be just a loose connection under the cup holder

Today I got a good bit of work done. I started off doing a full car flash. I only had the firmware from 07/18 instead of the latest firmware but it should not matter. I flashed everything except the stuff I am ripping out for the nbt evo and also the cas so I can make aftermarket keys for my car. I used an S class attached to jumper cables to power the car during the flash.

When the car was under it's own steam the alternator was peaking at over 15v. The battery in the car looks original! People complain about the IBS system but it made the battery last 9 years. I ordered a Bosch AGM battery for $175 with tax and core charge.

Next thing I tackled was starting to get my nbt evo in the car. I bought a F10 Carsystems NBT adapter with most a while back for a hefty sum of $500 USD. I always had good luck with their stuff but their service kinda sucks. The included most cable that needs to go from the ZGW to the box was too short. Thankfully I had a jumbo most cable sitting around and the excess fit in the little radio cubby.

The evo is powered up but I still need to wire in the ATM for telematics. That is my e90 nbt screen. The touch screen order got canceled but I found a none touch screen for $45 shipped.

The rear seats are a bit heavy and were difficult to get out of the car.

url=https://postimg.cc/Th6VJJ89][/url]

The door sill trim was on there really good. It made it difficult to run the atm wires to the evo. The build quality on this thing is much better than my E90s.

I quickly rigged up the wiring and I got connected drive weather to load up!

I then pulled the center console trim and found that the key antenna was not even plugged in and that there is a screw missing. This solved my key issue!

I put the rear seats back in but I forgot to put in the trunk liner. Looks like they have to come back out when
I work on the car next.

The tools to do the spark plugs and injectors come in next week and I have an appointment at the dealer to get the fuel pump and OFHG recalls done. The lady on the phone didn't want my vehicle info so I am not sure if they stock all of the recall parts or if she just didn't care. Something tells me I am going to have a loaner for a few extra days while they wait for parts.

Anyone have any tips for the OFHG? I am scared shit less of sizing my engine by not doing it correctly. Reports all over the forums say a lot of conflicting information.

If you don't already have it, the door sill clips will come out undamaged using this tool from Amazon for $6.50 (hyperlink)....without it, you will mar up your paint and bend up the plastic clip...the clips must unfortunately must be removed, and slid into the plastic sill trim before reinstalling the trim....the clips slide in from opposite directions, or you could just slide the trim in back on the clips without removal (Re: the gray clips with a rectangular head)

The tool will also come in handy in a lot of other areas of you car....

Nice writeup.

Those clips look the same as the E90 but damn do they not want to come out. I got the trim out and in again without issue but it took a good pull.

I wonder if anyone has tried to make a shield to keep the oil from leaking into the pulley area?

I saw a shield that that mounts behind the crank pulley to prevent a shredded serpentine belt from getting into the oil pan.

I am replacing all of the belt components afterwards.

Today I am going to do plugs and coils and tomorrow I am going to do my injectors.

Congrats and welcome! It's nice to see younger F10 owners, I got mine when I was 19 with 19k miles and slowly made changes to it to get it where it sits now.

Today was not a fun day. All of the plugs came out fine except cylinder number 5. I rocked it back and forth like the fcp video said to do and it came out. While installing the new spark plug it would not go down all the way. I removed it and the threads on the end are messed up. I took one of the old plugs and lubed it up with anti seize and it got down a bit farther. I got a new spark plug at autozone and tomorrow I am going to get a m14x1.25 tap to see if I can save the threads. I believe that is the correct thread size.

Good News! I tried to install an old spark plug with anti seize after getting something to eat and it went in all of the way! I pulled the fuel pump module and cranked the engine over a few times to try and get any potential metal shaving out of the cylinder. I then vacuumed the cylinder out with a shop vac. I installed the new spark plug and it is running a lot better now. I still feel like there is some sort of "skip" every once ins a while. I am going to install new injectors tomorrow and hopefully it runs 100%.
