The schwaben tool uses a compressor. It includes directions but it pulls all air out of system then fills with coolant. Super quality tool.

For those that want to do this but get scared by the price tag of the system, just get the cheapo ~35 dollar ebay ones. The vacuum draw works via a dead simple physics principle (Venturi effect, same thing that gives you ground effects in F1) so there's no actual moving parts. The ebay ones will work just as well, get the metal ones.

If you only want to check for vacuum and don't mind bleeding the lines, Advanced Auto (maybe autozone as well) loan out pressure test kits for the cooling system. Should fit our cars. Keep in mind running pumps dry will affect the longevity of the pump, so might not be a great idea.

Personally I'd go for the ebay one.

As far as I know, it's just an alternative to the BMW system used at dealers and you follow the BMW instructions.

I have the tool, but haven't done the service yet. I'll probably be doing it this spring, not looking forward to it. I am interested in this different drain method - that's for sure.

F10 has been super solid. Hate that there is no drain on radiator, but this approach made much less mess.
Just did this. Super clean process, but only 3liters out
How'd you get two gallons?

So you pressurize the expansion tank when you purge the water pump?

Pretty much. You're not really pressurizing the tank, just displacing the water with air.

Ok giving up on the method using the expansion tank, only got 2-3l for a second time. For you guys that took of the radiator hose, how’d you guys get to the E6? It’s so tight in there

Not sure how to get to the E6, but I would agree that you should just pull the hose. It's never good for a pump to cycle air.

Which hose? The one with access from the the underbody? I tried pulling from passenger side hood, couldn't get the hose off even after loosening the two clamps.

Believe it's the driver side one. I'm not sure what E6 you're talking about, the coolant line shouldn't have a nut holding it on. View the procedure here:

Hey everyone, after poking around I think I got an idea. For those of you that do have the m sport package with the auxiliary radiators for the cooling oil. There is a coolant hose that easily disconnects. I'm thinking I can just use that as a drain and keep the car running while filling it up on distilled water to get all the old coolant out. After this I will drain the remaining distilled water and fill up the car with the correct coolant. Just my train of thought here.

What hose do you refer to? A picture?

Curious how much you get out that way. Don't you need to use the special tool to fill though?

He's replacing all lost coolant with distilled water, than coolant again, so air never actually gets introduced into the system.

The special tool is primarily for leak testing. It also saves dealers time because you don't have to bleed for 10 mins, but if you're DIYing, you can not use it and just run the bleed procedure.

Here's the photo, I'm thinking to just let it hand and have it drain out coolant while the car is on. While the old coolant spills out I can just fill it up on distilled water to give a good flush.

I assume you're getting the car up to temp before yanking the hose? Otherwise, the thermostat might not actually open up.

Yes I'm having the car run and while it's running and draining, fill it up with distilled water to flush it out.

The only problem I see is that the coolant won't reach the oil cooler, so my car might over heat. If that's the case then I will try to find another method

Does anyone else have a whole lot of extra hoses in the way? My car has the M-Sport with S840A High Speed Synchronization and the S823A Hot Climate packages. I'm not sure which combination of these it is but, so far as I've been able to see, my lower radiator hose looks nothing like the pictures I see on here. The outlet seems to be a plastic piece that elbows back up vertically along the radiator and is attached to the radiator with some form of a clamp (but not a hose clamp) that I haven't come across before. Of course, I closed it up before I remembered to take photos.
