Vibrating intake duct creating cabin noise

Anyone seen or heard of this?

Car: UK 2014 535d (313 bhp)

Symptoms:
  • Loud resonant noise at idle only. You would think it was a loose heat shield.
  • Engine is smooth, and no vibrations felt.
  • Sound comes from forward of the dash (engine bay).

With a bit of investigation, I have found that this engine vibrates quite a bit at idle, but none of those vibes make it into the cabin. The mounting system works well.

The intake duct, though, vibrates like mad, and creates this resonant noise. Putting your hand on it, or shifting it into a new position, causes the noise to stop, until the vibes have shaken it back into it's natural position and it starts to resonate badly again (to the point where it looks blurred) and there's the noise in the cabin making the car sound like a 1972 diesel Golf.

I have made a temporary bodge that just applies a bit of tension to the intake duct - this gets rid of about 80% of the noise. Just wondering if this is a known thing, and if there is a known fix.

I have the same problem with the intake duct on my F31 330D M Sport. Surprising how much noise this piece can generate. Problem resolved when held manually. Took it to the dealer today and they have ordered new parts, for fitment next week. The part comes with felt strips, which in my case have visibly moved.

The intake ducts on these cars, regardless of model, are loosely constructed. The joints aren't exactly tight from the factory, and I've had mine out of my car easily 75 times while working on different intake designs. That said, I don't have any rattles or shakes, though mine are easily taken apart now.

You may have luck with a short, 3" or so, silicone coupler over the duct joint. A couple hose clamps to secure it, and that may get rid of the noise, in addition to looking more professional or stock as compared to the zip ties. Good luck!

At it's first service, the dealer cut the ties, gave it a wobble and declared it "fixed". The power of a dashcam...

Of course as I drove it home it was creating a right racket, so had to re-install the cable ties as soon as I got back.

Doesn't worry me that it looks dreadful - but a bit disappointed with the dealer. Who also topped up the screenwash and coolant with tap water from a watering can and managed to get the oil refill quantity wrong so that it showed "minimum" when I picked the car up.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

My offending piece is a long rectangular duct - at one end it connects to a short curved duct, which connects to the intake grill, and at the other end, to the air filter. It makes a racket where it connects to the short curved duct, even though it appears to be reasonably well connected.

If new parts don't sort out the noise, I will install a rectangular clamp around the connection and tighten it until the ****ard stops vibrating!

Just to let you know that I had the two air intake ducts replaced today under warranty, which has resolved the vibration noise issue. Hope you get yours resolved too.

Same vibration issue

Hi there.
I had this issue with my 2014 535d and decided to remove the unfiltered air duct to the filter housing, when re-installed starting with pushing the front part in and then hooking it up to the filter housing, it sat a lot lower than before?
It was fully engaged but I had to pull up on it to get the 8mm self tapping bolt into the coolant reservoir lug that it bolted to, and the resonance has stopped😎
It looked badly fitted to me and that’s why it was resonating. HTH.
