FYI on MHD and XHP tunning
Recently I went into this journey of flashing these tunes to get a little more from my F10 N55 M-sport on original software since 2012. The car just felt heavy and too tamed.
I first did xHP which immediately after, my start/stop stopped working properly. I would get warning about coolant temperature too high. I reached out to XHP and they told me I had to update to latest i-step for DME. Not a bid deal since I don't use it and coded to always be disabled unless I enable. Since MHD updates the DME software to a newer version, I decided to pull the trigger and get it done so I don't have to take in to dealer and pay for a flashing session. Well, now having DME and EGS on newer software meant that all my other ecu's were much older and got codes and warnings for DSC. The car would not go into any other mode but Comfort and warnings on the dash. MHD said I needed to flash DSC to get rid of this issue. Did all the research and got newer software from others in this forum and did update on ZGW and DSC and now it is all good. No codes and car is super fast and fun. In retrospect, I wonder if simply updating istep to newer level should have been my first step, but the point of this post is, if you are on older software, be ready for some issues like I had to go through. My suggestion, take it in and get all ecu's flashed at dealer, or learn how to do it yourself before going down this path. |

Depending on how old an istep you're running, yes - updating the whole car first would be good idea. From my research before flashing it seemed like you'd have to be on 2011 or 2012 istep for most problems but maybe there are more gotchas extending into 2013.
For various reasons I was happy to get complete vehicle flashes before my extended warranty ran out. Lots of little issues get fixed that way and you have a better base for mods. |

I've had quite a few MHD users with early F cars come in complaining of vehicle issues post flash, up to and including a no start condition.
The off the shelf maps MHD uses are being loaded into incompatible software versions it seems, causing a slew of headaches. Having the dealer or a well equipped BMW Specialist independent program and update all modules in the vehicle prior to loading a tune is a good idea. Every car that came in was resolved after fully programing the vehicle to the highest iStep with ISTA/P. Alternatively choosing a tune based on more than it being the cheapest option out there works as well. I've flashed dozens of F chassis BMW's with Mission Performance DME and EGS tunes with absolutely zero issues. If there were to be an issue I'm there to resolve it on the spot, and can involve the tuner if needed for 1 on 1 resolution assistance. MHD will reply to your email in several business days.... |

Take it to a dealer or indy. In order to safely do it, you need a battery charger, which are around 200 bucks minimum. At that cost, unless you plan on constantly updating your software (not advisable), it's more hassle and worry free to just take it to an indy.

Like others said, take it in to dealer. There are too many headaches and unknowns when flashing these modules yourself. I was able to flash most of them, but with days of research and help from the community. If I had to do it all over again, without a doubt, I would have gone to dealer and let them update i-step. I used a second running car to connect battery while flashing, but that might not be an option for most with one car or limited time.
