F10 535i Noise
Picked up 2016 xDrive and now noticing a light knocking noise when driving and parked .....noise seems to be most noticeable at about 1700 - 2300 rpms - after that the other noises of the motor may drown out the specific noise I’m hearing.....very rhythmic with rpms and only when you give it a little throttle to keep the tach up around 1700-2400 range...as you let off the throttle noise disappears.
Driving in 1st gear slowly you can hear the noise. Stressed out, I took off the serpentine belt thinking tensioner pulley....nope sound still there. I finally went back to dealership and drove another f10 and I could actually hear the noise...so I am a bit more relieved but just curious if anyone else knows what sound I’m talking about.....made me think it was a rod bearing.... |

9000 miles later the noise is still there. What I’ve noticed is the rattle/knock/resonance only happens when engine has warmed up a bit. Noise is much more pronounced when cold outside. Oil analysis showed no internal metal and nothing in oil filter. No oil consumption. No issues. Can anyone hear the same noise?

I have had a very small knocking sound as well for over 20k miles now. Can't seem to locate it either. I do push the car hard every now and then as it is tuned and have had no issues as well. Will be following thread to see what ideas pop up.

Has anyone have any updated info on where the sound could be coming from? Have looked a couple of times over the last 3 weeks with 3 separate people and we can not seem to really pinpoint the exact area.

From what I understand the ticking sound that sounds as if it were the tensioner may possibly be the vacuum pump. I hear it all the time when cold not nearly as bad when idle settles or car is warm. Ive done multiple oil changes in 3k mile range, checked for flaky oil or any debri in the filter and nothing. Im not worried about this noise. Im sending in the oil sample to blackstone just to get a more understanding of my engines health. You can do the same order a free bottle to put oil sample in and pay for it to be analyzed.
Also ive heard the same noise on other n55 engines in multiple videos and the uploader doesnt even realize, and heard it on another bmw I worked on.

Pull the oil filler cap and see if it's from under the VC. I wasn't able to play the shared file, but from what I've read it sounds like vacuum pump chirping which freaked me out too.
Other samples: https://youtu.be/GbM6zYO2-Q8 https://youtu.be/d2PHfaO2vzA?list=UU...2OuU8CAP92EJMA https://youtu.be/Bmas6Hdh5WA I also thought tensioner system until I pulled the oil cap. Mine only does it will cold or only partly warmed up. |
