Lost my F10 tonight.
17 year old kid still on his learners permit blew a red light because he was looking down at his phone, driving a car that wasn't his and he wasn't insured on. Clipped my left front at road speed perpendicular to me, and then whipped around slapping my drivers quarter panel and rear door.
Four airbags deployed. Drivers roof, seat, knee and wheel. Car is without a doubt totaled. I'm beyond pissed right now. Kids family (like 8 to 10 of them) showed up within minutes and just told him not to say anything to the cops, but not before he'd already stated he was looking down at the phone and knew he ran the red.... I'm sure this one is going to be an uphill battle with insurance. |

Hope you are ok, sorry about the car.
We all know you put a lot into it and in the end it is just a car. Bright side, it sounds like you and the police got enough ofna statement. That should be enough for the insurance, of course you have under insured coverage. I think the hardest will be gathering receipts and convincing your insurance it was worth that much. Of course planning on your next! Good luck and keep us updated. |

I just spent about an hour pouring over invoices I have, giving best guesses on those I don't, and calculating physical labor times on all of the modifications, factory retrofits, and upgrades I've done on the car over the last 2 years.
Just shy of $48,000 parts and labor at normal retail pricing. (IE you walk into a shop and ask them to make it so) Insurance is gonna looooove dealing with me on this one. and yes before anyone asks I plan to retain the salvage provided the number they come with makes sense, and I will part the bitch out. Don't go PM'ing me with requests though yet. |

Damn, sorry to see that happened to you. Was there any witness to the accident? Did the kid tell the officer working the wreck that he ran the red and he was looking down at his phone?

Well today has been decent so far I guess. I went into work this morning to open the shop and get the morning clients squared away, I ended up leaving a bit after 1pm as my back was bothering me too much. Went by the hospital and had them check me out, dress my burn wound, and xray my back.
I had one of the techs get my hood open so I could see what was what. Both engine mount arms shattered, the drivers side inner structure is pressed up against the charge pipe and dented it pretty good. The turbocharger outlet hot side charge pipe is crumpled up from the drivetrain bouncing around. Entire front end is shifted several inches to the passenger side, and the inner structure on the passenger side is flared outward as well. No doubt its totaled. Oil line shacked core support, cooling fan bound against A/C lines. Chargepipe deformation, dents Hot side chargepipe and my custom turbo inlet crumpled and my 2nd degree burn on my left side from the seat airbag gas generator, tender as all fooooook. The bad spot there is the size of a soda can end with charred flesh still there that hasn't fallen off yet. Now for some potentially good news, the other drivers familys insurance company accepted liability and processing my claim on their policy. I hope they don't have basic ass state minimums which would be a maximum of $25k property damage which doesn't come even close to what I want. |

Agree. That burn closely resembles a 3rd degree however due to the small section of charring, it was classified as a 2nd. As mentioned, keep it clean and stay on top of the treatment to avoid infection. Feel lucky and bless that you can rebuild yourself and another ride.

Sorry about the accident. I had the almost identical burn from my M3 being totalled by a similarly clueless person.

Insurance is scheduled to come out and look at the car tomorrow.
This morning I got one of the techs to toss it up on a lift so we could look at the undercarriage and make sure the damage the adjuster won't be able to see gets property wrote up to ensure this thing gets totaled. Both left lower control arms, tierod, subframe, wagner intercooler bent. Per BMW this sort of damage requires the EPS rack be replaced due to the lateral force imparted. Right side engine mount arm broken Rear chassis brace in front of the rear wheels tweaked upwards, means there is some bilateral tweaking in the chassis. Backing it out to go wait for the grim reaper to arrive, on what will likely be its last drive. |

It's yet to be seen what the retained salvage value will be. If the number makes sense I'll keep and part out the car, if it doesn't it doesn't. I should know that number and if it makes sense to do so. I have to stand to gain significantly to justify the work over the buy back price to mess with it.

It's always a kid on the damn phone. Shame about the car. I'd be sad as sh.t.
Bet they give you about $25K for it. Hopefully more, but insurance companies... I'll also bet you're already eyeing your next project. I'm looking forward to it anyway
