N63TU cold start noise
Hi guys,
I know I am posting in the 5-series group, where I have a 6-series, but since there was no response in te 6-series group I hope there are some people here that can help :-) Since a few thousand kilometers my 650xi Gran Coupe is starting to make a noise, only on cold starts which is driving met nuts. The sound is somewhat similar to ticking valve lifters, but not quite the same. Metallic ticking, in line with rpms of the engine. It happens only on the cold start procedure, when it idles at 1500 rpms, when it drops to normal RPM the noise is gone, also when revving it back up to 1500 rpms. What I replaced so far: - Roller under HPFP / drivers side bank (thats where I think the sound comes from) - Vanos solenoids / drivers side bank (absolute PITA by the way) - Oil + filter ( I change oil every 8000 kms ) Here is a vid. of the issue: https://youtube.com/shorts/xItRK6pOAuM?feature=share There are no errors in DME1 or DME2 in ISTA/D, car is super strong. But noise drives me nuts. Any help/input is greatly appreciated. cheers |

Kind of sounds like timing chain slap. I believe there's a known issue on OG n63's where the timing chain wasn't heat treated properly and thus stretched excessively, maybe related to what's going on with your TU engine. I'd get it check out ASAP, the chain issue was actually one of the things they checked with the N63 CCP.

Fairly sure it is not timing related, no timing related errors in ISTA/D, and the noise goes away immediately when the cold-start procedure stops.
I'm suspecting maybe a small leak at the wastegate bushing(s) that goes away when the turbo's heat up. but will investigate further. |

Wait didn't you say it comes back when you rev back up to 1500?

nope, maybe I did not formulate it correct
It appears on cold starts, and goes away immediately when the rpms drop. When I rev it up back to 1.500 rpm after the cold start, there is no more ticking/noise. |
