GA8HP Gearbox question

The maximum torque of the GA8HP45Z gearbox is 450 Nm. If you upgrade Stage1, what is the adverse effect of upgrading to 520 Nm?

It's just a factory torque rating with a huge safety margin. Like anything like that, it can be exceeded, often by a lot.

Also that is a max torque rating. The amount of time that it will see anywhere near that value is limited unless you drag race the car constantly!

It's worth noting that while researching modest engine tunes and xHP transmission tune, I've discovered that the TCU has torque limits programmed in to 3rd and 6th gear on the 8HP. Between the TCU and ECU output is limited. I've read threads for another car brand that uses the 8HP45Z and those folks looked at the technical docs for the transmission and determined that those two gears had the most clutches engaged (if I remember correctly) so drive power went through the most gear sets and is a likely explanation for the limit.

I'm sure that the limit has some design tolerance for longevity, and you're only at risk for damage when you exceed those limits (not just by having the ability to exceed those limits). Same thing with a tune - when you increase boost, timing etc.. to make more power, you ARE shortening the life of SOMETHING, somewhere. But what? And by how much? And the situation is only different when you're actually running in the expanded limits.

I plan on doing TCU and ECU tunes this year, but my goal is a more engaging driving experience through faster shifts and a more responsive and linear throttle, not better drag racing.

Is the transmission in the M235i and F10 really the same? I have both, and the M235i shifts are lightening fast, maybe 2x as fast as the F10 in M mode. Recently got a 4 series and x3 loaner, and the shifts were similar to M235i.

I am sure depending on the year they might have revisions to the transmission and the software.

It's all in the programming.

Take a look at xHP flashtool. I've heard great things.

I echo your statements based on observations of different cars, and even identical cars with and without 2TB.

(For what it's worth, coding my car from 205 to 2TB transmission does not change shift behaviour at all).

Sorry for my ignorance but what is 205 and 2TB?

I believe the 205 option is automatic transmission, and 2TB is sport automatic transmission.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Different software calibrations.

That is correct. Coding to 2TB only allows Sport+ and Launch control. The TCU software is not changed so the shift times, etc are not affected.

Agree. I've coded 2TB to enable retrofitted paddles and see if there was a difference. I have a pre-LCI with no DEC switch so I get neither "SPORT+" or LC. So, basically all that 2TB gets me on my platform is working paddles (probably could have got the same coding 2TE I think it is) and S1,S2,S3 on the KOMBI.

However the forums are full of people claiming either:

1/ there is no difference between factory equipped 205 and 2TB (but I've experienced the difference first hand, so that doesn't seem right)

2/ You can code 2TB and shifts are faster etc... They aren't.

Tons of F30 owners have documented that setting SAT, even through a phone app, really changes shift programs. Maybe it does on that platform - don't know - but it doesn't on the F10.

I'm happy to have the option of xHP offered for our platform. That should be way better than 2TB and everyone can load it.

It would be worth if launch control was available otherwise seems like a pointless thing to do if you have xHP unless of course you want paddles.

How hard is it to code? Can I get a different steering wheel with paddles?

After I upgraded bootmod3 Stage1, the gearbox shift has a feeling of frustration.

Hi , I owned 2016 BMW 528i x-drive ,so I'm planning to do BM3 flash to stage1 too next month , then I can have 40-50 more hp and similar more torque(I hope that flash not ruin my engine which is just 13000km used) :-). Is that stage1 also making any changes in Gear box as well ? I have 205 automatic transmission .

I don't have BM3 yet, probably will when summer tire season arrives here.

From my research, BM3 will make no difference to the transmission. You may also want to check out xHP Flashtool, however, which does reportedly make a huge difference.

I'm also planning to be an xHP customer this summer season.

This is the answer from the XHP store about flash transmission for 528i x-drive n20 :
"Hi,

we do not support them right now, but we will during this year!
