N20 Engine Locked Up

Hello, so here is what happened with my 2015 F10 528i xDrive. I was driving on sunday about 75-80 mph (regular traffic flow speed) on the highway and the car threw me 3 errors. Adaptive Headlight Malfunction, Transmission not in Park and then on the instrument cluster it showed starter/alternator message. I had just drove the car for about 15-20 minutes before it showed up.

The car would not start but all the electronics like the cluster, idrive everything would turn on. Called BMW roadside, they thought battery might be dead but I told them it wasn't as all electronics were turning on but they still send a jumper. That didn't work. Then we got it towed to my local BMW dealer (Erhard BMW of Farmington Hills). The car also could not be put into neutral as it could not be turned on and so we had to drag the car onto the tow truck with the tow hook while it was in park. Also, my car had just come back from the same BMW dealer on that wednesday (4 days before this happened) for having the ICM module replaced. So tow truck and I dropped off the car sunday night at the dealer with the night drop in box and everything.

Luckily I still am under CPO warranty and only has 53k miles so diagnosis and everything is covered.

The next day, I go to my SA the next morning when they open and explain the situation and he gives me a loaner X1 and says I will call u back and let you know what is going on after they check out the car.

He calls me the next day and says that BMW wants them to test the engine and stuff for a day or two and then see what it is going to need. I say ok.

He calls me on thursday (today) and says that BMW is replacing the engine. I asked what happened with the car and he told me that something locked up internally and that is all he told me and that BMW told them to replace the engine.

So I am just wondering if anyone might know what the issue could be or if they are trying to hide something and just not tell me the full story or what?

Thanks for any and all help on the matter!

New engine --- great. You will also get a warranty on that engine. Don't overthink it.

What warranty will I get on the engine? Because I only have CPO left on the car till March 2020. So are you saying a warranty higher than that on the engine or what?

Something locked up? I'd ask for more information even if they are replacing the engine...this is no small deal

They wouldn't tell me what locked up. All my SA told me was that something internally locked up and BMW told them to replace the engine.

You will get a new engine warranty. I do not know how long but 2-4 years I would expect. Now this is just the engine --- not the whole car.

From what I've seen, BMW replacement parts typically get 24 months. Not sure whether or not that applies in this case.

Just in case you need it in the future: to put the F10 in neutral, press the engine start button, and then the unlock button for the shifter and hold it one click towards neutral, then release and push towards neutral again and it will display a warning that the vehicle will be in neutral and can be moved for 30 mins

I learned about this last week when my 2011 535i fuel pump ground wire shorted and couldn't start the car. Luckily I work at Jaguar and BMW is across the street so I had it on a flatbed there and they quickly fixed it due to a warranty extension for thag fault
