1) Anything can be stolen if someone wants to steal it badly enough.
2) Local news lives and dies by sensationalism – "if it bleeds, it leads" isn't just a joke. Is this really a widespread problem? |

Lol.
As I understand it, that's where they hide the dead bodies... https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c205g10g0nvo

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

no, this is mostly toyota and hyundai case
the bmw g-series have much stronger protection and very complex bus structure with encryption between main module and motor ecu

In the good old days a simple kill switch discretely located in the cabin earthed the car dead as dead. Maybe $2, think that kind of tech will still work on a modern car?

I generally don't worry about any of my vehicles being stolen. I've got a locking automatic driveway gate, my cars are always parked in their respective garages which are located at the rear side of the home. I've got an 8.5' privacy fence around the entire property.
One afternoon my son & I were out in my Callaway Z06 and stopped for lunch at a local pizza place. I noticed a guy walk up and start taking pictures of the car, not unusual. But then the guy started getting down and taking very specific pictures of the decals on the car, emblems, interior, and then it appeared he was taking pics of the VIN. When my son & I started walking outside he walked very quickly in the other direction, hopped in a car, and took off. That's the only time I've been worried. It would suck if one of my daily drivers got stolen, but they're replaceable. The Z06 is not, so I take a lot more precautions with it. |

There was a Corvette & Camaro theft ring busted just 10 mi from my house last month, 29 cars worth over $1M. I regularly search for my car online to see if that is going on. Have found it a couple times.

Let's be honest: anything can be stolen if someone wants to steal it badly enough. At least where I'm at, the odds of my car being stolen are low enough as to not really warrant me doing anything special. I of course lock the car, but I understand that that's more to stop petty theft than anything; if someone wants to get into the car, they're getting in and there's not much I can do about it.

This has been an argument I've been having with many in the motorcycle community. I see thread after thread asking what the best anti-theft devices are. My comments about having good insurance and being smart about where you park your bike doesn't go over very well.
I had an aftermarket car alarm in the very first car I purchased on my own. After that, I've just went with whatever came with the car and trying to be judicious in where I park my car. |
