Program key

Just picked up s 2012 535 m sport. It came with 1 key and the non-bmw dealership said buy a spare online and we will program it. I did and they can't. It's a "virginized" key but my local bmw dealer won't program it because I didn't buy it there. Any options besides eating the cost and buying another? Anyone in the Chicago area know someone at a dealer that could help me out?

I thought you just put the new key up against the steering column where indicated and it programs it?

Takes a few goes though.

I think that's just if it comes from the factory, no?

I don't know the solution but I know putting the key on the side of the steering wheel is for starting the car when the key fob battery dies.

It's pretty simple.

"On newer BMWs without the Keyfob slot, you need to program your new key by holding it against the marked spot on the right side of the steering column (key mark) and then start the car. IF YOU CAN NOT GET THE NEW KEY CODED RIGHT AWAY, take the old key out of the car and move it far away from the car. Hold the new key to the same spot until the car recognizes the new inactive coded key. Once recognized then have someone bring the old key to the car and start it."

Yeah it would work if the key came from BMW in Germany

So an eBay key won't program that way? One would need the dealer to do it? If they even could or would?

Just curious as I have always liked to have at least 3 keys. Then again, this isn't really a key, is it?

Another thought. Who cuts the key portion?

Seems to work for a lot of others who have tried it.

As I mentioned you appenrently have to do it a couple of times and ensure the original key is not in range.

could we get a new key to do this? like the new x5 keys https://i.ytimg.com/vi/JarvxKxVBF0/maxresdefault.jpg

I always thought our F10 keys (i have a 2016 model) were kinda dated looking. And the car itself with the lock button in the middle (like the older E92 models).

But hey, those are small things to get over.
