How? BOT was making no progress in cutting down LEC while HAM was making up time quickly. If there was a chance that BOT could overtake LEC, Mercedes would leave their position if there was any chance for a Mercedes 1-2. HAM was not given P2 just because.

This is a simple strategy. Yes usually you let drivers race but not at the expense of points when the season is this close.

HAM has cut the lead to 0.5 seconds while BOT has fallen back at least 8 seconds. This was a no-brainer and BOT has no reason to be angry or disappointed.

Well whatever you think of Lewis Hamilton - and I am no fan of Lewis 'the person', you have to admire his driving. He truly is one of the greatest ever. That was amazing!

LEC should be proud of his drive - Ferrari almost let him down again with engine issues but he still pulled through. If it wasn't for the bad pit stop with Sainz, Ferrari could have had an amazing finish.

HAM got a penalty from the FIA.
So there is no doubt who is at fault here...
IT's HAM who knows his place, as it's for the FIA to decide!

LEC didn't come on contact with HAM because he now had seen what HAM is capable of. Ending in the barrier risking your life is way worse than choosing 2nd place. And he nearly lost it too as HAM forced him of the racing line. If LEC had crashed there (and he almost did), HAM would have gotten another penalty.

Max hit the wall at a 51G force. The audio from him post crash is tough to listen to. Hopefully he isn’t out for an extended period.

Penalty seemed ineffective in this case, punt your chief competitor win the race.

Just started the race. Happy to see Max walk out. I can't imagine what his body went through at the moment of impact. Hopefully nothing more than a concussion at worst.

I think Ham gets the fault by a slight margin, but it could have gone either way. I don't think there was ill intent. This season has been fun to watch, super competitive. Love to see Mclaren taking small steps upwards!

^^at those pictures you can clearly see how much room HAM still had on the inside. There is almost 1 carwidth room there.

I believe Max was on the ideal line, at least that's what my F1 game tells me haha

I heard Lewis say 'that was my line.' I get that, but Lewis being behind going into that turn, I think he's more at fault. Tough one, because I do enjoy how competitive that first lap was. But if somebody could have prevented the crash, I think Ham is more at fault.

Actually HAM said (over the radio while still in his car), and I quote:

"I was ahead going in there man...."
....

"It was fully my line, he turned in on me"

But of course the aerial view shows someting completely different. HAM was behind and was forcing VER from the racing line...
You cant be ahear when your front wheel touches the rear wheel of the other car.

The pressure on HAM to win in the UK was too high so that he decided to start and play dangerous games.
