Question N57D30 Engine

Hi,

I have just placed an order for a new 530d (expected delivery in may)...

I have been plagued (like so many) with repeted HPFP failures on my current E60. This is one big reason for the switch from gasoline to diesel. I was under the impression that BMWs diesel engines where/are more reliable than their petrol counterparts...

Until I read up on some threads on the Internet like this one:
http://www.bmwland.co.uk/forums/view...p?f=17&t=80648

Does someone have technical insight into the N57D30 engine? Is it plagued with the same design problems like earlier diesels??

Does BMW have any engine that is reliable?
I just wanna enjoy my ride...not bang my head against "Engine malfunction, reduced power messages.." all the time.

Regards

N47/57 series engines have a completely different manifold design. The swirl flap mechanisms are totally different, and of an in-line design.

As is shown on the BMWLand threads, the older designs have been a cause of great concern and debate, as total engine failures have been caused by a simple ingestion of a flap part.

Revisions have been made even on the M47/57 engines, but early cars with small flap spindles had major issues. We can see why BMW have moved to a new design, with ther latest engines.

Thanks Pete,

I feel a little more reassured now. I guess only time can tell...

How about other drivers here on the forum? What is your experience with this engine?

I own a F10 530d after having owned an e60 530d.
The new engine is absolutely wonderful. It hardly sounds like a diesel, and from inside the cabin you would be hard pressed to tell that it is, even when accelerating hard up to the redline at just over 4500 rpm. It sounds like a BMW straight six with a bit more of a guttural growl, which I think adds to the character of the car.
You may also be interested to read FifthGear's review online. They expressed the view that the 530d was marginally more responsive than the 535i.

I have driven the new 530d a couple of times and I like it a lot! I totally agree with your expression of the sound it makes..a very nice guttural growl at high revs.

My concern for BMWs engines right now is their reliability. I have been forced to replace the HPFP several times on my current car...and I am feed up with it.
