Oil blowing by the rings until everything heats up enough to expand and seal.

The conventional wisdom I know:
  • black smoke - soot, running rich
  • blue smoke - oil
  • a little white smoke - steam from condensation
  • heavy white smoke - coolant entering combustion chamber

At startup these engines run a cold start mode to light off the catalytic convertors. It runs very rich to start at all in cold conditions, and keeps running rich with combustion in the cats.

I'm not shocked to see evidence of running rich. The snow makes for a clear contrast that we may not normally observe. Personally, I would not conclude there was anything amiss unless there are other indications of problems.
