I own a 2012 535i with a basic M sport heated steering wheel w/o paddle shifters. I am trying to find good info on this topic and keep striking out. I want to upgrade the steering wheel to the nicer/sportier steering wheel with paddle shifters and heat. I have come across numerous DIY's across the internet and forum, but nobody addresses which OEM steering wheel compatibility.
Should I only be looking at heated steering wheels that came on the M5? M3? 335i F10? What years of which?

Yes, I know about single vs dual stage airbags if I were to buy one from overseas and having to code for single stage and I know about having to code the car for paddle shifters.

I found a nice 2018 M3 steering wheel with heat and have no clue whether I'm going to run into harness issues or not?

Just hoping someone else can shed a little light on this for me.

realoem.com is your friend here.

Generally, no a 3 series wheel will not work on a 5 series. You need to look for pre-LCI wheels from F10's.

You will need to stick to the f10 wheel, m5, LCI or not.
The modules and harness will need to be changed.
I think Stuck did a thread on going to LCI and adding shifters.
Of course of you go M5 the m buttons won't work. :-)

I know the M buttons won't work, which is fine, but I think if I buy those buttons instead of the non-M buttons, it would make it easier to sell one day if I decide to get rid of it.

Well I picked up this 2016 M5 wheel and started to build it out but then I have no idea which harness I would need to get and would this even work on my pre-LCI car?

Hi, yeah I've read it, and very similar to what I'm trying to do. But he doesn't go into which harness he used and which control module. I'm guessing I need a harness that would fit the M5 with all the options, heat, paddles, etc? He doesn't go into detail on this that I'm aware of.

why would you need a heated steering wheel if you're in TX?

If I had a heated wheel I sure would keep it.
I went from e60 to f10 and didn't realize winter package had changed.
I sure miss the heated wheel now!
