My insight is as the parts are already out, why not? You have easy access to parts that will eventually need to be replaced anyway. I'd probably replace all the rubber parts and gaskets that I have access to now that might be hard to reach after installation.
Car has 127 on the clock; just an FYI for N63 owners the rear main seal was a gusher. Not sure how prevalent that is. Also the intakes had a decent amount of gunk (residue) which makes me think these cars could have used a port injector.

Couple pics of the lew lump.

Rear main seal from old motor - if your loosing oil this could be the issue.

Nice project. The only thing that makes me scratch my head is why you are not looking for more power, it's so much easier to do when engine is out (ICs, bigger turbos, DPs etc). I understand you are trying to save money, but why not take it slow in that case and when time comes you'll have a nice powerful 550i instead of ordinary weakish yet another n63 (that will start leaking probably on the first day again). I mean if it's a hobby/project for weekends - why not do it once and do it right while you are at it? Unless you are in a rush of course.

No rush. Just dont see the value of adding more horsepower to a mid size family sedan. Perhaps you live near the autobahn but the speed limit in most highways near me is 65mph; pretty sure a 400 horsepower 5 series will get there and beyond fast enough. besides the major drawbacks to all the mods mentioned. bigger turbo = more spool time; same for intercoolers. Catless dps smell and dont add much gain for the price. Been down this road with my 335.

Someday I will get a real dedicated sports car but this project was just for something to do on the weekends.

Do you know if the prior N63 had a CCP done on it? Index 12 injectors, timing chain mods, etc? I'd certainly look at the CCP list and apply all of that if rebuilding.

Not sure to be honest - how can I check the injectors? Pretty sure the timing chain is fine - the replacement motor came from BMW and it has a 2018 build date.

Dealer confirmed CCP was done in 2016.

Just an update - engine is almost back in - need another floor jack to lift it in place.

One question is should I use some type of break in oil? or just run some non-synthetic for a few hours?

I am also looking for a wheel repair specialist to restore the rims in the north of Boston area any recommendations?

Started

Got it running again:

Will need to resolve what appears to be either a leak or bad turbos as at idle there is some white smoke coming up from the turbos. Will get an inspection camera to take a deeper dive before pulling the turbos.

There are no visible leaks looking around but something could be weeping. Happy to hear it go.

Going to finish up replacing the cv boots and button up the front end; then continue to fill the transmission. Any tool recommendation to get the c clip into the cv?

I also need to change a bad control arm.

Looks like I have a leak where the cast iron part of the turbo meets the aluminum. Anyone know where rebuild kits are sold?

budmun great work!
How many labor hours have you put in?
If you were to do it again, would you just pay BMW dealer to do it?

Try them on the rebuild kits for turbos.

I think 65 hours so far - some of that was sitting on the creeper looking at different things.

I would do it again, dealer wanted $5900 to do the install, but I did the project to keep busy on the weekends. Same deal as doing a puzzle or something. Now that this is pretty much done will have to find something else to direct my attention - basement needs finishing.

Thanks for the info on the turbo rebuilds - I ended up talking to pure turbos - when I told them the price for new ones from BMW they noted it was a steal; I will pull the current ones off and take a closer look over the weekend but my plan is to purchase new ones from the dealer. Amazingly parts for this car are pretty reasonable.

Lol, if you want weekend projects, I'll hire you in the future haha. I'm in CT. Crossing my fingers, I hope I will not have any engine issues for another 20k. 78k now.

Is that the price for both? without core charge? fits xi direct bolt on? If so id get them; was quoted $548 each for the 550xi turbos.

That's each but makes sense to pay the $500 diff for longer term.
