It all depends on the phone OS, the version you're on, and the specific music application you're using.
For example, an iPhone 11 Pro with the standard Apple Music app will work just fine. However, if you use Spotify on the same phone, then no luck scrolling through your library or playlist. Not sure about other apps/services. Android on the other hand is similar, but you have to be on Android 9+. Google Play Music app works just fine, but you won't have any luck with Spotify or Youtube Music. I haven't tried other apps/services. My 2014 BMW infotainment is YEARS ahead of my wife's 2017 Mercedes system, but it is less reliable when it comes to which phone you're using because of the amount of features it has and the updates that are needed to keep up with iOS and Android. Sadly, updates from BMW don't come often.

I have the same issue with 2013 via Bluetooth. The only solution I found was to connect the phone via usb cord
