2012 535i engine noise

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is normal or not but my car makes this noise. ~84k miles, all service has been done when it was supposed to.

Any opinions?

The oil temp was at 180-200F.. now there is also some white smoke coming from the top left side after I drive for 5-10 minutes. Need to get this car fixed ASAP

My engine makes similar noise when its cold but it goes away after few minutes when the engine warms up. 130k miles. Should I be worried? I thought it was normal

To be honest I'm not really experienced with cars, it just sounded weird when I opened the hood. My issue I think is related to an oil gasket cover leak

Are you referring to the ticking sound. There's a lower background sound, was the electric fan running? You do have the acoustic cover off, so will be louder than most will be hearing.

If it is the ticking, most of the N55 engines have an injector sound track like that, at varying levels. Mine's quieter than your sound track. Fuel can make a difference, using a fuel additive in a tank of fuel, like BMW's (Techron) additive may help quieten them down for a while.

I only use fuel from Shell 91. Never used additives or anything else. Once I get the gasket cover fixed hopefully it will be better..

What is worrying me more is the white smoke that was coming into the cabin.I treated this car like a baby, but I guess these are all normal maintenance things for an 84k mile car.

I googled and got this:

The head gasket seals the internal combustion process and keeps coolant and oil from mixing together. A perforation to your gasket or a blown head gasket usually occurs as a result of an overheated engine. When coolant flows into the combustion chamber from a blown head gasket it burns/evaporates into white smoke.

OR is this white smoke from exhaust that is seeping in?

the ticking noise can be a symptom of low oil (or very thin oil); have you checked the Oil level?

smoke into the cabin can be a oil/coolant leak that drops in the exhaust manifold, that creates the smoke and gets sucked into the cabin but you should be able to confirm that checking if there is indeed something leaking

First of all, thank you all for taking the time to reply.

@Trian it does sound like that's what's happening. The smoke was coming from the left upper side of the hood.

@cals Although I have seen a small oil stain on the driveway after the car sat more than 2 weeks, I have constantly checked the oil and it's been at max level ever since I got the oil change, ~1500 miles ago.

I am taking the car to a service on Monday so I'll be back with some updates

At this mileage, with the engine temperature that the car runs. It's usually valve cover (gasket), pretty common issue.

Head gasket is a completely different thing, normally you shouldn't have those problems if you keep the fluids up to date.

Smoke from the top left is almost always the valve cover. Oil drips onto the hot catalytic converter/exhaust mani which is right there and gives you that smoke. You'll often times smell it in the cabin too because the blower is right around there too.

Been there, exactly as you say.

A good head's up, always eliminate the obvious.

The sound we are hearing is fuel injector noise. It is a bit louder than most will be, but 'DI' injectors are not typically silent. (N20 injection sounds very diesel like).

The car is in the shop until tomorrow, they said besides the valve gasket leak there is another coolant leak from the radiator. Those will be replaced and we'll go from there.

The guy said there was an warning sign showing low coolant but I never saw one and I check the status of the car fairly often.

Also, another question: Whenever I stop at a light, ASS goes in and turns the car off. When I take my foot of the break to go, the car switches to P/N by itself. I don't mind the ASS, but sometimes when I'm not aware it switched to P/N I will rev it and I'm the last to leave the traffic light.

Anyone else had that happen to their F10?

You should consider changing the valve cover too if you are keeping the car for longer.

That's not normal, ASS (lol) has never shifted into a different gear for me before

I had similar problem with Auto Start Stop, it got so annoying that i stopped using A.S.S because sometimes out of nowhere i would get stuck in P at the traffic light. Few months later I noticed that my battery was dying and after replacing it A.S.S started working perfectly . I can't say that battery is the reason in your case too but it definetly was in mine so you can just check the battery to be sure.
P.S. I was getting no warning sign that my battery was dying, I found it on my own when car didnt start on the first try... So don't rely on warning signal, check it with bimmerlink or with tester.

This happened to one of my 5 series previously. The dealership did a software update to the DME and it fixes it. There are other factors like the above post. Battery may be degraded and it may not work properly.

Good news! I got the car back, and these were the items that were replaced:

Coolant leak:
Radiator hose- upper
Cooling hose- lower
Radiator
Coolant

Valve cover gasket:
Valve cover gasket set
Breather hose

Total:$1600

@OnlyGerman They did suggest that, I declined and that will be the next item on the list to replace.

As far as the ASS goes, they said the battery is at 70-80% so that can be the reason. Since it's not at 100%, it will prioritize where to send the power and will cut off extra features like ass to make sure everything else gets enough. 2nd item added to replacement list.
It's not a terrible inconvenience, I usually disable the ass feature anyway. I looked it up and as far as I understand it could be solved with some coding or battery replacement.

I love this F10 design and the car drives really well
Thank you everyone for the advice!

Keep in mind a battery SoC of 70 - 80% is a typical running state in our models.

It's not necessarily a sign of a failing battery. Even if you charge it to 100%, after some use it can drop back to ~80%. The alternator will not be charging the battery to maintain 100%, (it's only supporting demand above about 80%), as battery capacity is left for over-run energy harvesting.

There are a multitude of factors why ASS doesn't function. Charging the battery will eliminate the battery being the cause, if ASS works after an additional charge.
