Daimler Believes New W223 Mercedes S-Class Can At Least Match Predecessor In Terms Of Sales

Daimler thinks that the all-new W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will eventually boost overall sales while matching or even increasing the profit level brought in by the current generation model.

According to company CEO Ola Kallenius, the size of the luxury segment is being fueled by a surge in global wealth, which is good for large sedans like the S-Class, despite the market leaning heavily towards SUVs, crossovers and EVs.

“The increase in wealth works in our favor,” said Kallenius. “If you look at its prospects, this new generation can match the 222 and even grow over the entire life cycle.”

Mercedes has sold over 500,000 units of the current W222 model, since its introduction back in 2013. This includes the Mercedes-Maybach variant, a derivative that happens to be particularly popular in the world’s largest market, China.

Kallenius also stated that annual sales for the W222 S-Class peaked at just over 100,000 units, a level he believes the W223 should match. He said that a 25% improvement in manufacturing efficiency (due to improved outsourcing logistics) should ensure that S-Class margins don’t get diluted, reports Autonews Europe.

“We naturally have the goal of achieving a return at least as high as we have with the previous one,” added the Daimler boss. “It’s an important pillar of our profitability.”

Meanwhile, Kallenius declined to comment on the future of the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet variants, although Daimler execs have indicated in the past that no successors are currently in the pipeline.

The configurator for the new S-Class is live on the German Website. I just had a play with it and, wow it is reaaally expensive. The Merc was always the most expensive out of the bunch, but this one is over €20k more than a comparable 7 series.

S400d 4Matic (SWB) with my specs came out to €147k and a 740d xDrive (SWB) is 123k with similar options. S-class traditionally also has less discount compared to the 7, so in leasing rates (which 95% of these cars will be) that's probably around 30% more.

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Arrives In The UK With A Higher Price Tag Than BMW 7 And Audi A8

Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, the S-Class, is finally on sale in the United Kingdom, with first deliveries commencing before the end of 2020.

Offered in five trim levels and with a choice of three powertrains at launch, it has a starting MSRP of £78,705 (equal to $100,158 at today’s exchange rates), making it £8,085 ($10,289) and £5,820 ($7,406) more expensive than the rivaling BMW 7-Series and Audi A8 respectively.

Customers can choose from the AMG Line, AMG Line Premium, AMG Line Premium Plus, AMG Line Premium Executive and AMG Line Premium Plus Executive grades, with the base model featuring standard 19-inch wheels, MultiBeam Intelligent Light System, soft-close doors, MBUX infotainment and digital cluster and Nappa leather upholstery.

The AMG Line Premium starts at £85,200 ($108,424) and adds bigger 20-inch wheels, 360-degree camera system, active ambient lighting, panoramic sliding sunroof and, for the long wheelbase variant, electrically adjustable rear seats with memory function, luxury head restraints and climatised rear outer seats.

Features such as the augmented reality head-up display, heated front armrest, heated front and rear door armrests, heated steering wheel and windscreen, climatised front seats, Air Balance, Energizing Comfort Package, Digital Light with Ultra Range high beam and 21-inch wheels are standard in the AMG Line Premium Plus that costs £95,695 ($121,780), which is limited to the LWB model.

The £3,795 Executive line ($4,829) package can be specified to the Premium and Premium Plus LWB cars and includes rear electric sun blinds, double sun visors, front passenger seat adjustable from the rear with removable head restraint and electrically extendable footrest, and 7-inch MBUX rear tablet.

Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter diesel in the S350d and S400d, making 286 PS (282 HP / 210 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque, and 330 PS (325 HP / 243 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) respectively. The only petrol offering is the S500, which uses a 3.0-liter unit, rated at 435 PS (429 HP / 320 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft).

All models come paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the S400d and S500 are available with the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, for the first time in a right-hand drive S-Class.

Mercedes-AMG S63e caught in new spy photos

Quote:
This high-output S-Class gets plug-in power

With the new S-Class officially in production, Mercedes-Benz is hard at work developing its more fascinating variants. This Mercedes-AMG S63e plug-in hybrid is one of the more noteworthy additions to the executive sedan portfolio, and one that is expected to raise some eyebrows when it hits showrooms.

This prototype doesn't tell us a whole lot we don't already know. In fact, it's rather nondescript, and the camouflage effectively obscures even the charging port on the S63e's left rear fender (as it does the fuel filler door on the opposite side). Still, automakers aren't typically in the habit of slapping fake doors on their development cars just to throw us off their scent, so we have every reason to believe this is the real deal. Plus, this appears to be riding low on high-performance rubber, which is another dead giveaway that this prototype has some AMG seasoning thrown in.

Like many new plug-ins, the Mercedes-AMG S63e is expected to prioritize performance over efficiency, and considering that the base S500 4Matic boasts a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, the bar for "performance" models in the S-Class lineup is not exactly set low. Every Mercedes with this powertrain setup runs on a 48-volt electrical architecture that powers a number of important components. The upgrade S580 also takes advantage of the 48-volt architecture, but it’s powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with up to 496 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

The S63e will obviously lean heavily on that electrical architecture, and with the help of a modest battery pack and at least one electric motor, rumors suggest that it could produce as much as 700 horsepower. Fret not, fans of big engines. Despite Mercedes' decision to pare down the S-Class lineup, we expect the V12 to return in a future Maybach model, and an AMG variant (S65, anybody?) can’t be too far behind either.

No deliveries in the US yet. One MBWorld poster said his order was slated for April delivery but its quite unknown, especially with what will likely be supplier delays, and another poster said yesterday that W223's are at the Baltimore Port.

Looks fantastic. The interior design isn't my cup of tea but Mercedes knows the way the market is headed and had to adapt. Home run of a car.

Yes, it's the standard for sedans overall, the standard for luxury without moving to RR or Bentley, and the standard for interior features across all vehicle types.

Why BMW and Mercedes feel de need to copy that shitty Alfa Romeo design?
These guys copied the taillights too...

Za Germans should go back to their own design boards and look for the term "originality" in dictionary...

Just spent the day with the new W223 S-Class which just arrived at dealers today, and even got to go for an extensive test drive. I am thoroughly impressed with the vehicle, easily top of the class for me.

The interior looks better in photographs than it did in renderings. Great looking car. I hope the launch goes well.

Ugh, that dashboard screen though. Yuck. So out of place compared to the rest of the interior.

Agreed, the exterior styling is too bland. It looks too soft, the S Class should have a powerful presence that I don't get at all from pictures, but I haven't seen one in person yet.

The center console/ipad thing is ugly, but at least it's molded into the center console a bit. The dashboard ipad looks like a complete after thought, like they forgot to include a dash and didn't notice until it was rolling out the door for delivery, so they just glued that screen behind the steering wheel.
