'Please Add Quart of Oil Message' Question...

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well.

Curious to know…

When our vehicles call for adding a quart of oil, is the message something that is saved to the vehicle’s ‘key read’ data for a future point in time when the vehicle is scanned?

Thank you very much.

Making a guess from the info that I can remember about the data retrieved from a BMW remote key...the answer is probably no.

The data retrieved from a BMW‘s remote key (from my memory) are things like:
Vehicle Identification Number
mileage
fuel level
last time driven
CBS (condition based service) info like when the next service is due or past due etc. (this is the info that can be found in iDrive under Vehicle Service etc)
(newer keys may also have the capacity to store GPS data)
If this message is stored...it is probably stored in the ECM (electronic control module) related to check control system. If you have software that can retrieve data from the car’s ECMs...you may be able see that information if you connect to the OBD connector with appropriate hardware.

Since you asked the question...it would be interesting or revealing to know WHY you asked? It doesn’t appear to be anything worse than getting a check control message that your washer fluid is low, or that your trunk is open etc. If you add the oil, washer fluid, or close the trunk...all is well.

EDIT:
You can see in the video (at the beginning and at approx 42 seconds into the video) the info that the key reader gets from the key. And again, the CBS info is more about status of the various systems...instead of listing when you were low on oil at a specific mileage or date. Specific info like that is probably stored in one of the ECM (electronic control modules) that records and issues the check control status.

Thank you very much for your most thorough reply!

I ask because I'm experiencing increased oil consumption (being asked to add 1 quart every 1k miles).

I'd like to have the dealer review the records of when I was prompted to add oil, instead of them telling me they have to monitor the matter going forward.

Would you say that the ECM does in fact store this info?

You have the N63? That engine is NOTORIOUS for oil consumption. Look up the N63 recall forum for BMW's response.

I can't remember off hand but perhaps if I post the info below...someone that has just used the app may be able to remember if this info was stored when they looked at their error memory or info memory message/codes. The pics below are from the Bimmerlink app...but if someone has ESYS or one of the other software application...hopefully they will chime in as to if messages like "add oil" etc info was available.

The official BMW obd software has a function for reading the last 50 or so warning messages that popped up on the screen.

It would be wise to report this to the dealer as soon as possible. They may insist on a consumption test even with the evidence you're able to supply, but given the level of consumption you're reporting you should qualify for action under the N63 settlement (unless you have very high mileage). I would definitely not wait to get this process started. Some of the root causes of this issue can create other issues which can lead to actual engine failure.

For the dealer to recognize that the engine is outside normal operating specs it must be consuming more than 1qt every 750 miles .

They did an "official" oil consumption test on my n63tu . I am averaging 1qt every 1500 miles and the dealer wouldn't do anything . It is bullshit .
