Engine ECU

Pursuant to the GSR ECU flash tune, I figure one possible solution is to get a second ECU to send to them to flash. That way the car is not down for days while the chip is mailed back and forth, and you can swap back to OEM if there are any issues. Looking at realOEM, it appears all pre-LCI 535i's (as well as other vehicles) us the same ECU that has a series of four part numbers. The most recent is 12147620419. Despite the common part number, does anyone know if there are differences in the programming based upon manual vs automatic transmission, or year to year? And where is the ECU actually located?

My brother goes junk yard trawling fairly regularly for his project cars. I plan to have him keep a lookout for a wrecked F10 to pull an ECU from. But I need to make sure he gets the right thing, if there are variables. FWIW, I have a 2011 535i base model car with a manual transmission.

Does anyone have anyone have any expertise in this area?

You cannot reuse a used ecu they are vin coded to the vehicle. You would need to buy new one and have bmw code it to your car.

These are questions that I raised with them too. There might be a way to clone ECU's but you have to ask them directly on that. The ECU is located under the intake manifold. It actually covers up a hole in the manifold which I think bmw uses as a way to cool the ECU then again not sure why BMW did that.
