Bluetooth update
I had exactly the same issue with the download hanging at 89%. On advice with BMW Assist I went to the dealer who downloaded the update for me
I had already downloaded it o a USB stick but USB socket in armrest would not recognise it The upshot appeared to be MY stick was USB 2. Dealer used a very old USB stick. And the upload went fine Downside though was I still can,t get SMS or email to come through to I drive Spent over an hour on phone to Apple unsuccessfully trying to get iPhone 4S to work but no joy. They admitted software update is needed and say their engineers working on it now. I am just going to wait a little longer Sorry that may not help but good luck Scottie |

Okay, so I assume you are using the email client built into the iPhone, right? So, you need to have the email notifications set up just like SMS. When you go to settings...notifications...messages, you obviously have everything set up correctly. Now, go into settings....notifications....email. And set up the email the same way you set up messages. Message center on, alert style alert, and view lock mode yes. Now, send yourself an email and it should show up in your messages under idrive. I have an old iPhone 4 and an October 2010 build (2011 model year) f1. So, I am absolutely confident we can get yours to work too. |

Next, if it still fails, try using a different USB stick. If that fails, try rebooting idrive. Depress start button with no foot on the brake whilst you continuously depress the radio's on / off button. Let go of the engine start right away, but keep holding the radio power button in. Eventually, you will be greeted with the big BMW logo on idrive. Let go of the radio power button and wait while idrive reboots. Now, try again. |

Apparently, there are no updates for cars built in 7/2011. No luck for me.

I screwed with mine for 2 weeks with no luck. Then out of the blue the other day it started working (sms, no e-mail). Go figure. Two gripes though:
-You can't read a long message -You can't respond (for obvious reasons) Oh well. Better than nothing. |

iPhone 5 and no luck with SMS or email. I have the latest software which I uploaded last week. I've tried every possible way and nothing.

I have email working on IOS 6. Not ideal but every time I get in the car I go to phone settings - notifications - mail and change the show recent items to a different value. I then leave the phone to lock itself. Very distracting though when driving and you see a load of emails coming through. Can also have the email read out but when deleting emails it doesn't delete it from them phone.
Receiving text messages in the car just works without the above tweak. |

Depress round button once to take you to icons. Depress the round button twice really fast. In the bottom row, look for email. Put your finger lightly on email icon. When you see a red minus sign let go. Touch the red minus sign next to email icon. This kills email process. Press round Button once more. Restart email and go to inbox. That's it. U can now use iPhone any way u wish and emails will come through messages... Assuming you already have that part set up. |

I found this from another BMW forum and it worked on my iPhone 5.
Under Settings, Bluetooth in your iPhone, go to the devices connected where it shows your BMW has paired, open that and turn on "Show Notifications". Then under Settings in your iPhone go to "Notications" then under each heading "Phone" "Messages" "Mail" make sure you have the following turned on: Notification Centre ON Alert Style Alerts Badge App Icon ON Show Preview ON View in Locked Screen ON The messages will only transfer to your idrive when your iPhone goes to sleep and has a blank screen (Locked) hence the View in Locked Screen, without this setting and your iphone has turned itself to Locked will the message be transferred, if you open the iPhone to view the messages they won't transfer to the iDrive, iPhone must turn itself to lock so set your iPhone to lock after 1 Minute in settings. |

iPhone 4, 2012 (MY 2013) F10. Software is latest version in phone and car and all via Bluetooth.
There are various tips with things to do with the phone when you get in the car but one common thing is to let the phone lock itself. Andy |

Many steps, but I finally had messages/e-mails come through today. Strange how hard it seems to be to make this happen. Really only worth it for longer drives. But the text to talk is certainly a valuable feature. I had my phone connected by Bluetooth and an Iphone cable to the USB jack. Still not sure if the USB connection is necessary.
Thanks for the good suggestions on this thread. Bill |

Email came thru today on Nav Screen
Folks, i'm not sure what I did, or didn't do; I have been receiving SMS for quite some time now, but this morning on my way to work, a spam email showed up on my phone (iPhone5 by the way) and wouldn't you know it the envelope showed up on my screen, at first I thought it was another sms that came in at about the same time, but no... it was the email.
I'll have to do some testing to see if it's consistent. check out the pics the first is my phone screen shot an album cover was one I have my music playing via bluetooth, took the picture as soon as I saw that the message was an email. The second pic is the nav screen shot. |
