Time to swap the Motor?

Hi Guys,

I haven't posted much lately. Being very stupid and tuning an N63 Motor that is already dying. I have currently 120,000KM's on the car and the Valve Stem Seals are getting worse by the day. As it stands, the current value of my car "in good condition" is roughly about $20,000. I purchased the car 2 years ago and I love it so much, and I do not want to sell it.

Currently in repairs, I am getting quoted close to $10,000 to replace all 8 injectors, sparkplugs, valve stem seals, and oil pan gaskets. Now, I am talking to the shops about possibly just doing a swap to a N63TU engine, but I am hearing that even the TU's have issues that arise. What would be the best next step forward? Is doing a TU Swap even possible? I know these motors are junk but I do love the way the F10 looks and drives.

Here is a video of my car just for fun.

I know its too loud.

You can't swap a TU engine BUT, the N63 engine price has tanked
for $10k you can put a brand new engine in there AND have some cash left over! Go for a new engine rather than all the other stuff

Hi Addy,

thank you for your reply. Do you know anywhere I should begin to search for a new motor? I have searched online but cant seem to find anywhere I should trust / look at.

I have been contacting BMW NA, Doesn't seem like they are willing to help at all.

Engines are backordered, but the price is cheap so just go to local dealer and ask for a price, it’ll blow your mind. Keep in mind that a new engine does not include injectors.

No injectors or inter coolers or turbos or wiring harness or exhaust manifold etc. but most of that is swapped out from your current engine. Would be a good time to also buy new coils/spark plugs and maybe even injectors if you want.

there's a member here who recently swapped it on his car, budman I think is his handle.

Think BMW quoted $5900 for labor/parts to swap engine (probably have the actual amount quoted in the thread I had going). From what I understand that pretty much labor and parts that have to be replaced in the swap i.e. gaskets and single use bolts.

The motors from the dealer are cheap once you factor in the core charge (just know injectors and coils are not included).

swapping the motor is a beast of work if you don't have a 2 post lift. At $10,000 for "replace all 8 injectors, sparkplugs, valve stem seals, and oil pan gaskets." you would be better off having a dealer swap the motor. comes with 2 year warranty to boot.

Estimated cost:
Dealer install $5,900
New motor $3,700
New snails $850

The dealer will probably find other things that need replacing (when I was in there noticed some suspension bushings were bad and the intakes had piles of oil/carbon so i changed the pcv's and soaked the intakes). My car also had the ccp done (dealer verified over phone) so I was ok with using the existing injectors.

Id guess a dealer installed new motor would be close to $11,000

I noticed the Alpina b7 motor and turbos are massively discounted - think thats a direct swap for non xdrive.
