I don't think it makes any difference
it was on the left for my E39 but got used to it in a matter of days on the F10 Nothing you can do about it anyway so move on! |

Thats the best answer I have heard so far, what the heck is the difference, there are far more important things in life to worry about.

I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.

Same here, in fact this topic had me thinking... where was the volume on the E91? For me the right side is more natural, as cruise was on the left stalk on the E91. Now on the left side of the F11 steering wheel. Both hands are on the wheel 95% of the time with an auto anyway, so where is the issue? HighlandPete PS: I think these topics exist because the cars are so good there isn't much to criticise. |

I prefer it on the right, and cruise controls on the left, as that's consistent with the majority of other cars I've had over the last 10 years. Perhaps it's becoming a standard, which would be a good thing. Back in the day, it was a lottery when you got in a car of a different make whether the indicator stalk was on the left and wiper stalk on the right, or the other way round. Thankfully there was eventually an agreement on a consistent location.

I agree, and thats exactly what the steering wheel controls are for, spirited driving, but not just on the track, it can be on a curvy road or something similar. Around town going slow, one can just reach over and operate the volume knob on the radio, its no big deal. The volume control on the wheel is intended to be used when both hands are required on the wheel. Since most people are right handed, the right hand is better for multitasking, it makes more sense to put the control on the right so they can adjust the volume and steer at the same time.

On left hand drive cars the controls should be on the left of the wheel and on right hand drive cars the controls should be on the right of the wheel; simple as that. This is not about controls placement being ‘no big deal’, but about ergonomics and efficiency (in design, not production). Otherwise, the main volume knob - now on the dash - should be where the iDrive controller is (like Mercedes and I believe Audi); that’d be an even better setup. Also, the door lock/unlock button should also be on the door - not center dash - as it’s tremendously annoying to get out of the car while it's still on, attempt to open the rear door, only to have to go back to the front and reach over into the car to the middle dash to unlock the doors…

When down to adapting dashboard to right hand drive BMW are by fare the best I am talking even in comparison to far more expensive cars like 911’s and Audi R8, so Audi are by fare useless in serving our side of the world, and the best example on this is the Hand brakes, they are left on the passenger side of the section in between the seats for right hand drives, only BMW (not sure about Merc) moved the hand brakes to right hand side.
