Wheel Size/Suspension Question

I have a 2011 528i with the stock style 328 18x8 wrapped in 245/45/18.

I purchased replacement tires sized 245/55/18 by mistake. It seems like they won't fit.

I looked at the front wishbone suspension and there is almost no space between the tire and the wishbone. The wishbone is very close to the back of the tire and curves on top of tire.

How are people fitting 20"+ wheels on the F10 platform?

Can I fit my 245/55/18?

Thanks.

Try this....https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/

Tire width won't be your issue, rather tire diameter......

I'm familiar with online calcs like that but they won't help in this situation.

See how the top of part #3 on the second pic down curves at the top. That part will curve above the tire a decent amount.

I'm just wondering how people are fitting larger diameter wheels/tires on the F10.

Am I missing something simple here.

Larger diameter wheels, does not equate to larger diameter tires, necessarily:

1. 245/40/R19 (19" wheel) has a tire diameter = 26.3"
2. 245/35/R20 (20" wheel) has a tire diameter = 26.3"

....and in the case above, both have a tire width of 10.4"

The M5 F10's have difference wheel offsets to accommodate "wider" tires over that of a standard F10....not necessarily larger diameter tires...(larger diameter wheels can be used as long as the tire aspect ratios are maintained - to a limit).....

(Edit: I am not using wheel and tire interchangeably....and in the example above for an F10 M5 front, the wheels can be increased from 19" to 20", while the tire diameter remains unchanged)

Merely answering your question:

BTW, your original tire 245/45/R18 has a wheel diameter of 26.7", 0.4" larger than the F10 M5 tire......but your tire's cross section (width) is only 9.6" versus the M5's at 10.4""....

Yes…the terminology is called plus sizing or minus sizing. You can google the phrase for a more expansive description.

But as mentioned already…the larger the wheel’s diameter…the lower the aspect ratio of the tire. This keeps the overall rolling diameter the same even though the wheel diameter is larger. You can see an example of the change in tire size if you pull up the chart for tire pressure in the owners manual..
  • 17” wheel uses a 225/55/17 tire
  • 18” wheel uses a 245/45/18 tire
  • 19” wheel uses a 245/40/19 tire
  • 20” wheel uses a 245/35/20 tire

245/55-18 is 28.6" diameter. It will not clear the front knuckle. The largest diameter you can fit on the standard non-M F10 is 27.7". I'm using this diameter (245/45-19 = 27.7") and there's very little clearance on the diameter of the front tires.
