Hey guys, just need some input!!

Currently driving a 2014 528i that I have owned for 3.5 years now. Best car I have ever owned.

Replaced 2 spark plugs in my entire ownership and literally nothing else. Bought with 36k miles and now with 92k. (Warranty up to 100k) which is when I will be selling the vehicle.

I am really wanting another F10. A 550i to be exact. A 2016 model M sport.

I have heard and read about all the horrors that come with the n63 and just wanted some more feedback! Is the engine really THAT bad??

A 535i in the same year I was also considering but the performance from the n20 to the n55 is very minuscule. Just doesn't feel enough of an upgrade.





Sacrifice power for reliability and get a 535?
Or power over reliability??

I own both a F07 535i GT LCI and the 550i xdrive. If you’re not concerned with difference in cost of ownership Of the V8 go for it. The power is addictive and I highly recommend a good extended warranty. Don’t be surprised to shell out a couple hundred for hoses and such not covered under warranty tho. The 535i on the other hand is no slouch and it’s a cheaper car to own overall. Honestly you cannot go wrong with either pic as a bimmer enthusiast.

????. Over 60 hp & tq isn't minuscule. If you're talking mpg then you're right. I've had more than one 528/530 as a loaner and unless I drive in sport and mash the loud pedal every time I go anywhere, it isn't anywhere near as quick as my 535.

I have a 2016 550i MSport and I really enjoy it. An extended warranty is a good idea given potential maintenance costs, but I do think that a substantial number of the issues which gave the original N63 such a (deservedly) rough reputation have been addressed in the N63TU, and the 2016 was the last model of the F10 550i so benefits from all the improvements made throughout the production cycle. I bought mine with 34k miles on the clock and it now has about 52k. It's been a great experience so far.

2016 550i doesn’t have the N63, it has the N63TU. Try searching for N63TU feedback, or 2014+ model year cars for feedback. Be sure to filter out negitive feedback from other model owners, many selected a 535 because they were led to believe it was the most reliable F10 and have conformation bias about that choice. When I was researching my 2014 550 2 years ago, all the N63TU feedback was positive. Nothing led me to believe that a 535 would have been any more or less reliable. I've got a little dinantronics sport tuner on my car, raced a friend of mine with a f10 535i and we were neck and neck.

Yes 535i has a little more power but not enough of a difference.

Ditto...there are six iterations of the N63 engine don't conflate them but get to know which model has which so that when you're reading about any issues...you'll know which engine is being discussed. They didn't roll out all at the same time across the 5/6/7/X5 models that got these engines.

It was the N63B44O0 that was the real "problem engine" which the BMW settlement action was all about. But any engine 4/6/8/12 cylinders can have issues...every car is unique...and some will have issues even if cared for...and some do well even with some small neglect.

The very last document below gives the changes BMW made to the N63TU engine over the N63.

Oranges to apples. Can't compare a tuned 4 to a stock 6. Tune them both the same and all you'll see is the 535's tail lights.

A lot of misinformation here. Generally speaking, the V8s will never be as reliable as the I6s. You have to decide what's more important to you - the power, instant torque and sound of the V8, or a more reliable day to day experience of the smaller engines. Just like with everythign in life, you typically have to pay to play.

My N63TU in the Gran Coupe was less reliable than my 2 N63s combined. It's just the luck of the draw with these engines, so don't think for a moment that just because of getting a TU means you won't have issues. Mine was chugging oil like no other car before it, and there were no leaks to be found anywhere!

You will mostly hear negative stories, regardless of cars. Happy owners don't randomly come out/create threads to talk about how the engine has no issues.
