Bimmerpost - One Day Post Merger - Whadaya think?

Other than:
  • A few usernames issues
  • Reindexing of the search index
  • Broken links to other threads - a lot of which have been fixed
  • Having to re-do profiles, and find your subscribed threads again
  • Merged Off-Topic
The 1Addicts site feels pretty farging familiar to me. I'm amazed at the amount of work (largely) Mark has put into this, and major kudos to him for trying to make the bimmerpost inclusion of 1addicts as painless as possible.

I think a lot of people were thinking that there would be a stampede of people coming in here to mock the 1 , and change our experience. I do not see that happening.

The moderators are trying to make it feel as 1addictly as possible, and will continue to do so. So far, we haven't had to do much to make it feel familiar.

Soooo.... What's your take?

I was worried initially but it seems like the old 1Addicts. Great job to all the people that did the move.

Only one complaint, what happened to the yellow highlighted square by the post date that showed that it was a new post versus an older one?

Thanks guys. Smooth transition. I do wish there is a 1addicts link at the very top. Whenever I'm on e90post's forum, it's not a easy link back to 1addicts.

Mark knows about that, and will get to it. For now, click on the left-most icon, and be brought to the bimmerpost launch site. From there, there is a link to 1addicts.

Amazing. People seldom like change. I really like the format of 1Addicts which brings me back almost daily to read the post. I was worried about the change. Excellent job on the migration, seemed seamless to the users. I know that a lot of preparation and work to make this as smooth as possible went into this project.

All I had to do was update my profile and resubmit my photo.

So far, so good. I can live with our birthdays dropped from the Calendar page (griped about in a previous post), but I wonder if anybody's noticed they haven't added 1-series to the list of cars covered by the site at large in the main BimmerPost/1Addicts log-in page, ie...

"Welcome to BIMMERPOST, the ultimate community for the E90/E92 3-series / M3 / Z-cars / X-cars!"

If we have truly merged w/ BimmerPost, is it not reasonable to expect that E82 E88 be added to the above line?

Looks like most addicts members have worked out the kinks in getting their avatars and sigs working again. But I do bemoan the apparent loss of the 1Addicts own off-topic area. Unless I'm mistaken (does happen often), it looks like OT is shared. Suppose this was a necessity. Sigh.

Lastly, there seems to be an on-again / off-again issue with member settings for automatically subscribing to a thread to which you've posted a reply. I've checked my setting a couple times since merger-day, and it looks like sometimes I am auto-subscribed when replying, and sometimes not. I have not dismissed the possibility of goofing this up myself, but I haven't tracked down a slip-up yet.

* edited... Matthew actually figured this one out on his own. Doh. With auto-subscribe ON, a quick reply to a post doesn't subscribe you to the thread. A reply via the "QUOTE" button, does.

Okay. One final MINOR point to add (sorry)...

I just noticed that the "BMW Garage" link goes to the shared garage where all members' virtual garages are posted. Works great, and it's cool to browse all the vehicles. But, perhaps you've noticed, the title on the "latest additions" (main) page still reads...

"Latest E90Garage Additions"

How about just "Latest Garage Additions" and leave it at that...?

Admittedly, it's a wee point. Three or four days ago, a gripe like this would be worthy of ridicule. But, since the big stuff looks largely finished now, thought I'd toss this one in for consideration.

All right. I'm done nit-picking. All things considered, a pretty smooth and well-handled transition. Job well done by all concerned (who have probably lost much sleep in the process).

If you hover over the green "Forum" link a popup will display with 1series-1addicts being on the left

Also, head on over to the bimmerpost hompage (http://www.bimmerpost.com).

There's a little message for the 1addicts community.

Larryn, what does the below mean? So we can't PM the vendors from Commercial section of the forum? That would suck.

"***** Use of this private messaging system is restricted to NON-COMMERCIAL use unless you are a sponsor of the site. If you receive a private message from someone not listed as being an Supporting Vendor please report the PM to us so we can stop spammers. If you are a vendor and are not a supporting member and use this system, you account will be subject to permanant ban. *****"

Other than having to clean up my PM box (new site has much smaller storage) and put in a new bookmark on my iphone (the old one takes me to some e90post!), nothing has really changed for me. Great work team!

Hi Wayne.. It's meant to protect members from being solicited to via PM. We rarely had that happen at 1addicts, but it's probably more of an issue with a site the size of bimmerpost.

Not altogether loving it. I noticed the General discussion forums have been merged into the general Bimmerpost ones. I don't see that as a good thing. We had something of our own 'unique' interests and discussions I feel like that's been sacraficed. Sorry folks, but unless this was about money, I don't see what the urgency to do this was. Couldn't much of the same gains been made simply through links to Bimmerpost rather than morphing with Bimmerpost?

I know the content is mostly the same and the members are mostly the same, but to me it's not the same place. It's like your favorite restaurant, the one with the unique menu that catered to a like-minded set of customers you came to know, got bought out by a chain. Maybe nothing major changes at first except the name, but it's not that unique place you were looking for.
Understand, I bought a 1 and not a 3.
