Coding after Battery replacement
I replaced battery on my f10 535i 2013 with non-oem Exide AGM battery (95ah). OEM one had 90ah. After replacement i asked for programming/coding to let car know that new battery with different spec is installed but mechanic said that it was not necessary. He said that it should be done only if any error occurs after install. There was none.
So will there be any problem without coding/programming? Can i do it by myself? I have obd connector if it is useful. |

Errors will occur after install if you don't code, which is simple. If your mechanic has replaced a BMW battery in the last 10 years, he should know that automatically

You have to recode even if you replace with the exact same OEM battery - nevertheless a non-OEM battery with different capacity. That mechanic is clueless.
Install ISTA+ and code it yourself. There a couple of videos on YouTube that walk you through it. It's very easy.

You definitely need to register that you've replaced the battery (to tell it that the battery is new). You only need to code if you've changed the battery chemistry (AGM/flooded) or capacity significantly.
The options to choose when coding a battery capacity: wert_00 value 00 80ah 80 ampere-hours 90ah 90 ampere-hours 110ah 110 ampere-hours 70ah 70 ampere-hours 55ah 55 ampere-hours 46ah 46 ampere-hours 70ah_agm 70 ampere-hours (agm) 90ah_agm 90 ampere-hours (agm) 60ah_agm 60 ampere-hours (agm) 80ah_agm 80 ampere-hours (agm) From what I can see - 90Ah and 95Ah are in the same bucket. I would conclude NO CODING REQUIRED. Register the new battery and enjoy. Many tools can register. Even MHD can register a replacement battery. |

From what I've learned on searching up and videos about the charging system. It is a key thing to register a new battery. If not the smart charging system will think it still has the old battery in and it may not charge how it should, draining the life quicker out of the new battery.

Update:
I just registered new battery using BimmerLink app (I was asked if new battery was different type and i clicked NO) and now it shows 105Ah AGM in Bimmerlink and Bimmercode Apps. I assume I should change it to 90Ah right? But I am curious why it says 105ah when oem battery was 90ah, maybe previous owner replaced battery without coding... Anyways will 90ah battery cause any issues? Can i somehow check what spec battery had when it came from factory? Last edited by lukavergille; 10-03-2020 at 04:52 AM.. |

Battery coding (which is NOT the same thing as battery registration) is required when the specs of the battery is changed. In most cases the 90Ah/92Ah/95Ah batteries are close enough in specs that coding isn’t needed if you are changing from one to another...you may not even see all of those specs listed in the coding software. BUT...if the battery AH is greater...like changing from an 80 Ah to a 90/92/95 Ah...or from a 90/92/95 Ah to a 105 Ah battery (or vice versa)...then coding for an amp hour change that great IS required. Again, don’t confuse “coding” & “registration”...they are TWO different things. See info below about the IBS and also take note of the last paragraph that discusses battery registration.

If the Bimmerlink & Bimmercode apps are selecting the 105Ah battery by default...then go back and select to make changes closer to your new 95 AH battery. BMW originally installed 90/92 ah batteries in many F chassis models...then later upped them to 105-110 Ah batteries when many BMWs that were still under warranty were coming back with deeply discharged battery issues. Since you’re using Bimmercode & Bimmerlink...I believe you need to “code” the battery first using Bimmercode (choose the amp hour selection closest to what you installed)...then open Bimmerlink & “register” the new battery.
