BMW Tire and Rim Coverage Question.
I ordered a 14 535ix last month and it should be here in 2 weeks. I have not finalized (signed for) the deal yet but put 2k down to hold the order (its a lease in which we have worked the numbers). The Finance manager spoke to me briefly and offered me BMW Tire and Rim insurance for the term of my lease (36 months) at $2100. I think this is a rip off and wondering if anyone else has negotiated their price down. I'm in NYC and definitely want the insurance. the car has 19" Rims so its worth its weight in gold. Any help appreciated on whats a fair price to pay.

It's worth getting it as it covers aftermarket rims and tires.
It's is now sold as Bmw but still protected by the same company as before. However, they are charging you way too high. I got it for $32 * 36 months. which is more than half your price. you can bargain. |

You're being hosed... I paid $1,300 for 5 years coverage. This policy is definitely worth it... I've replaced 4 tires (3 LS2's and 1 winter tire) and 1 rim in the past 2 years.

some oem tires from the factory are covered by default (mine were but you have to check).
after they replaced them for free (see f10 bubble issues) i paid good year $42 per tire for road hazard. they will replace them for free at any good year location (just tires). i've never covered the rims as i thought that was a waste of money... knock on wood lol paying thousands or even hundreds of dollars for tires is crazy imo.

Dont let them tell you they wont cover aftermarket either.
As long as it is a proper wheel/fit for your car and tire is in proper shape and there is a failure, they will cover it. I had a 20" rim aftermarket and a Nitto 555 tire replaced, no problem. There is no clause in the contract that excludes aftermarket, nor states it has to be oem.

Yes, wheel and tire protection is so worth every penny! I've replaced 5 GY LS2 tires on my 2012 550xi via the coverage. Your dealership is charging you too much for the protection, negotiate the price with the Finance Manager before taking delivery of your car!
Enjoy...

I agree with Mellowyelllow06 that is way too high I got the same price he got from the dealer here in Maryland for 5 years and YES, it is worth it. I just had one replaced with a nail in it and my only out-of-pocket cost was the $50 deductible.

Take a look at some of the dealers who sell extended warranties for much less as some of them will also sell you the wheel and tire warranty within a few days of purchase of the car. I did so with my wife's X3 and was charged a little under $900 for it. It has the MSport 19"ers on it. Wish I had done this for my F10!

Pfffttt. You can get any half decent shop to repair curb rash on their painted rims for like $100 or so. Why blow thousands when you could just repair them when you need to for dirt cheap? Tires aren't that expensive anyway. Do you plan to repair all 4 rims and bust through 8 tires in 3 years? I didn't think so.
I live in LA, and our roads are full of potholes and crap much like other big cities. I think I only had 2 flats in 3 years of ownership on my M3. One was repaired free at a tire shop with a plug. The other happened within America's Tire 3 mo warranty on new tires and they replaced it free. I have a slight bit of curb rash on one rim. |

I had the finance manager offer this to me for 3 years @ $1800, I believe. I politely turned it down - pick-up is on Tuesday, so time to change my mind, I guess. I've had 18" wheels on my 335i for 6+ years and honestly never had a problem. I bent all four rims over time but just had them repaired - cost of about $500, and they were flawless after the repair. As for the tires, the 19" on the 550i I ordered retail for about $1400/set at tirerack, so they ARE pretty pricey... but you'd need to pop all 4 and then-some for this to be worth it from what I'm seeing?
I've heard bad things on this forum about the LS2s that come standard on the F10... I'll likely do what I've done with the 335i and swap them for non-RFTs. I simply carried a flat-fix kit (mini compressor with flat fixing goo) from Continental. I actually never had to use it (thankfully). I've run Michelin Pilot Sports on the 335i for these past 6 years with great results... even when hitting some ugly potholes here in the NY metro area. All said, I'll probably skip on the tire and wheel insurance. |

Looked at my contract, I got rim/tire protection for the lease for 1200. Your price seems way out of range.

$1400-1500 is a reasonable amount to pay for 3-4 years now. Don't offer any higher. |

BMW Wheel/Tire Insurance
This insurance might just be dealer or region specific. When I purchased my car i was offered the insurance and accepted it after I searched the web on the cost to replace one of these costly tires. Even though I've had great luck over the years of not blowing out a tire nor picking up a nail/screw, Lo & behold, what happens? Six months into the policy I picked up a 2 inch screw and they replaced it with my $50 deductible without question and mine you they were not the original wheels/tires I had replaced the originals with nearly new 2012 550i wheels/tires I brought off eBay.
Just my 2 cents. |

Guys,
Remember this. Someone has to make money. There are NEVER good deals in insurance especially stuff like this (Apple Care, BestBuy's warranty, and in this case BMW's tire & wheel warranty). It's a waste of money. What you need to do is to drive CAREFULLY. Don't be an idiot driving and texting, know and learn how to park, don't take chances. Don't get near the curb if you cannot see it! Don't get too close to the car in front of you in city if you cannot see what's in front of you, leave enough distance between you and the car in front of you so you can stop if you see a big pot hole. I mean come on, use some common sense. All curb rashes on any BMW wheel, even the extremely expensive $800 M3 ZCP wheels can be repaired for $50 against curb rash, the tires are really cheap ranging between $150-250 on tire rack. You really have to do some extremely bad damage to your wheels and you have to do it more than once for the insurance to pay itself off. Can it happen? Sure, will it happen to you? Probably not. Not unless you don't know how to drive. I have been driving Ms and BMWs for years in NJ, not once I had a crack, dent, bent wheel. Never hit big potholes, never hit curbs. All my wheels are like new. I did get a nail here and there and paid for the tire, but it's NOTHING compared to what insurance would have cost in all my cars. Be smart, don't just say it's just $50/month. Don't throw your money away. Remember, they are making money and there are never "good deals" in this |

RealStig; I'm sure all that posted to this thread are somewhat intellectually competent enough to know for what reasons and how they should spend their money. They/I/We were at least smart enough to buy a BMW. But then again I'm may question that logic after reading your post. Some of us just might not be as intelligent as you. Just my assumption. But Isn't it just incomprehensible how some people assume your intelligence is that of an idiot!!!

For my new M5, I'm being offered 3 year tire and rim protection for $1,300......presence protection for $2,200. I'm planning to keep and drive the car on Long Island and will likely drive less than 5,000 miles/year.
My instinct is to self insure, but I'm open to other opinions. |

Hey Man, go with your gut and environment, over the last 9 mos I driven thru construction areas and just regular driving and has picked up two nails. For me has paid off so far. It has only cost me $100 for close to a $1000 so far to replace to of these tires because of nail punctures.

We get massive potholes in the DC Metro Area. Forget curb rash, try bent wheels and bubbled tires. Your M3 came with either Dunlops or Michelin tires! Goodyear's LS2 run flats used on our 5's are infamous for bubbling! Since my earlier post I've knotted up two more tires and bent 2 wheels! BMW charges about $500 per tire installed and wheel shops in our area charge about $175 to repair bends and an additional $75 for resurfacing. Now let's talk about SafeGuard, the company who manages BMW's Wheel & Tire Protection Plan. Knock on wood, I haven't seen any issues with them regarding filing claims on replacing tires. Now how they handle wheel damage is a different story! My Service Advisor told me that SafeGuard is really finicky about damaged wheels. They don't cover cosmetic damage, and in many cases will only repair the wheel if the bend or crack prevents it from holding air in the tire! Since this was the case, SafeGuard sent a Wheel Repair truck which straightened and repaired my wheels. So yes, on these Goodyear RFT's you will go through multiple tires! Include a bent or cracked rim then it's worth the peace of mind of having wheel and tire protection! I plan on definitely getting this on my next BMW!!!
