N55 engine's reliability

How reliable do you think is the N55 engine? I recently thought of putting some money into the engine, like changing spark plugs, coils, and lots more. I only prefer OEM parts, not after-market. The vehicle I own is a 2014 535i Msport with 76k miles. Lemme know your thoughts!

I say very reliable. I’ve got 170,000 on mine. No major issues, but I always try to stay ahead with maintenance items.

I'll say one thing for certain.

If you don't maintain an engine, none are reliable.

If you want your drivetrain to last a long time, do the recommended maintenance, there are no lifetime fluids, fix things as they break, and don't use a hot air intake (cold air, compromise filtering ability), don't tune it and it will last a long time.

There aren't fords where quality is job none and routine maintenance on a bronco sport is a engine replacement every 15-30K miles.

More reliable than a N54 from what they say and N54 guys still stand behind their stuff. Myself im shooting for a G800 from Ghassen with a close deck, ported head and single im at 54k miles rightnow and loving what i got for now. I bought my car with the intention of having fun wit it keep it nice and POS FREE!

Wow! I find that incredible that these engines can last that long. Is that lots of highway driving? Good oil and regular changes, I guess.

I put most of the miles during its first 6 years. I drive about 50K miles/yr. It’s a lot of highway. About 150 miles each day. I got a replacement vehicle so this vehicle doesn’t get driven much for the past year

Did you change the transmission fluid at all, or if you've changed, what mileage did you change, and what was the reason that made you change the transmission fluid?

Yes, I do change them. They do not last a lifetime like BMW claim them to be. ZF makes the transmission and they recommends a transmission oil change every eight years or 50,000 miles whichever comes first. It’s an annual thing for me to do all fluids since I drive a lot. I only drain and fill opposed to replacing the pan which have a filter built into it. Two service ago, the drain bolt cracked on me as I was tightening it. It’s made of plastic and due to many heat cycles, it just becomes brittle and gave up. I was forced to replace the pan last service since I couldn’t drain anymore and there weren’t much in it to see at 281K miles.

Those are maintenance items and should be done regardless.

More than a N54, less than a B58. They are good engines, but from everything I read, the B58 has everything really sorted out. If you like the rest of the car, put some money into the maintenance it needs and it will last as long as you want it to!

Good overview on the engines and praise for the B58:

Got a 2014 535i model year too, almost 10 years and still going strong. Not sure if it's the LCI getting more quality parts. Did transmission and differential oil changes too. Other then that very minor leaks which just need to be rectify quickly to avoid it affecting other parts. Charge pipe is also recommended for change for this model.
