The OFHG engine stall issue is usually caused by a hydraulic valve that controls the stator in the oil pump. It might become clogged during major repairs involving an oil drain causing the oil pump to work at a minimum flow capacity. That is why it is extremely important to measure oil pressure according to BMW service documentation using special tools from BMW (basically it is a special metal oil housing cap with a valve that connects to the gauge). The valve should be replaced every 100k km or 60k miles.

Speaking of the oil filter cap it also can be a cause of damage in some cases. The valve in the cap has a spring. When it fails vanos solenoids can't properly fill with oil which causes pressure issues.
