Considering a high mileage F10

Currently driving a high mileage 2013 Ford Taurus SHO. Love the car but got totaled in a hail storm and now I'm scrambling to try to find something new on short notice. I would have rather kept the Taurus for another 3-4 years to wait out this horrible car market.

I previously had a 2007 E92 (as you can see from my outdated signature) and I loved it but it had it's share of problems that everyone else had. Water pump, head gaskets, HPFP. Sold it for the Taurus.

So I've widened my net in an attempt to find something. The 2010 and 2011 535xi is appearing in my searches but obviously high mileage (120k+) to stay within that budget. I'm looking for pretty specific set of features:

Reasonably fast
Reasonable gas mileage (only reason I'm looking for something different than the Taurus)
All-Wheel Drive
Adaptive Cruise Control
Heated Steering Wheel
Comfortable Seats (the BMW sport seats with thigh extenders are so nice being a little taller)
Less than $20k (ideally $15k)

Beyond that, I do like fully loaded cars but everything else is negotiable. Even looking high mileage if it's the right car.

Is a high mileage 535 worth considering? HPFP and water pump still issues? Any other major issues?

If looking at higher mileage, you are definitely in the right spot by narrowing it to F10 535s.

Water pumps meh shmeh, they get blown out of proportion. Mine is original at 160k in my F30. Original at 140k in my wife's E90.

HPFPs are cheap, find a genuine used unit for $100 and bet on it being replaced in the past. It has worked out for me.

Transmissions need serviced depending on the year, ZF 6 always need the bridge seal, mechatronics sleeve, and the bridge seal. Cheap to do yourself, and quite easy.

If the 8 speed, all it needs is fluid and filter.

Great cars otherwise, suspension components are very expensive. Thrust arms seem to always need to be replaced on used examples.

535s with the N55 are such great cars. Keep an eye on oil level, and that's it. I have an F30 with an N55 and it has been such an easy car to maintain. Our E90 with the N52 is always hungry for parts.

Ended up buying a 2013 535xi with 116k miles.

Also got a quote for a 4 year/60k miles extended warranty from Route 66 for $3.6k. I drive about 10k miles a year though so doubtful I'll hit 60k.

Extended warranty worth it at that mileage?

Valve cover gasket has been replaced recently. Water pump is original as far as I can tell.

A route 66 warranty for only $3600? Why the hell not!

Worst case scenario, like any car, something big happens and you'll be out the $100 deductible.

--

Has the oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler seals been done? Should be absolutely NO seepage around it. Oil can leak onto the belt and pulley, causing the belt to slip off and be eaten into the front seal.

Very easy job, count on $30 of seals and an hour for a DIYer. Intake has to be pulled slightly off, not all the way, to get to a bolt. May want to do intake gaskets if they haven't been done.

Also a good time if you plan on running a tune, to upgrade the charge pipe on the driver's side.

I can't find a drop around the oil filter housing. I actually did that job on my E92 and it sounds like it's easier on the N55 from what I've read.

I ended up not getting the Route 66 warranty, the fine print makes it sound like there's so much electrical/tech stuff it doesn't cover so it made me hesitant to get it.

Don't forget the necessary priming procedure for the m-sport oil cooler.

I called Route 66 directly and asked them which credit unions in my area sold the warranties. Called up the CU and got a quote. Got bounced around a little at the CU because they don't sell many and weren't sure who handled it but got it sorted out.

Word of warning - Route 66 is the one that processes the purchase and they only accept cash or cashier's check so depending on who you bank with, that could be a pain in the ass to get that much cash out.
