I would disconnect the battery first since there is an air bag right there as well!

Did mine a couple of days ago. That was probably the hardest, easiest job I've ever done! Side note, according to everything I've read, the arrows point towards the cabin, NOT the engine bay. I'm pretty sure mine were stock as we bought the car with ~25K miles on the odo and I had never changed them (we're now at ~77K miles) and the arrows were facing the wrong way (towards the engine bay).

newTIS states:

For microfilter WITHOUT tab, arrow should face cabin.

For microfilter WITH tab, arrow should face engine.

I'm unsure what the tab actually looks like and what it is refering to, but it might be why your old one was facing the engine.

Edit:

Figured it out. For the microfilter, BMW sources it from two OE's, Mahle and Corteco.

Tab (appears to only appear on Corteco):

No Tab (appears on both Mahle and Corteco):

The filters in both the F10 & G30 were tab-less and had the arrows facing the engine bay.

Are air flow determined by the tab?

"For version without tab on the microfilter (1):
Note direction of installation in marked area of microfilter (1).
Arrow must always point opposite of direction of travel for installation.
For version with tab on the microfilter (1):
Tab must always point in the direction of travel for installation."

Wow, I didn't think mine were that bad but it was absolutely disgusting for the amount of dirt, leaves, rocks and other nasties that I've been forcing my family to breathe over the past few years. Such a necessity for everyone especially because they are so cheap and such an easy job. I was really surprised, but definitely can feel more airflow.

Replaced mine not to long ago, My Trunk is electric so for good measure be sure to disconnect the ground and do not close the trunk! it is a safety measure as the airbag will be disabled, and not powered in case something get impacted the wrong way. It's fairly simple, had to really use my phone to find that last bolt on Far Left, it was tricky however possible, and I believe The Filters are pointing toward the interior of the car, not towards the engine.
