Can't plug OBD reader to the port

I've been trying to insert my obd2 reader into the obd2 port without success. It feels like the reader's lips are thicker than the groves in the port. I've used this reader in my Mercedes and never had an issue like that. Aren't the socket size and thickness standard? I'm posting both the reader and the port pictures:

Looks like port is pushed into the dash. Remove lower dash panel and clip it back.

What is the piece highlighted in the pic below? It looks like something is blocking the OBD diagnostic port. Did something break off? The area with the red arrows looks like it won't allow the diagnostic socket to be pushed in to connect.

That's not it.

NikMN , you are right. It's for some reason been pushed into the dash. I tried to push it back without removing the panel(there's some opening near the obd housing with some foam inside it thourgh which I can access the back of the port). But it feels like it's been mounted that way because I wasn't able to move it outwards even a bit. The previous owner might have tampered with it. Looks like I'll need to remove the panel to see the whole picture there. Will let you know once I figure out.

I'd taken my car to a guy for a spare key today. There he plugged his obd scanner with ease. Then I compared my reader with his, and everything seemed to be the same. Then I asked him to plug mine. He managed to plug it too but with some extra effort. And he had hard time removing it. So, the mystery stays mystery.

But WHAT is it? The OBD port & socket is symetrical and the socket has to go around the OBD port...and what ever that solid piece is that's highlighted in the pic I posted...doesn't allow an OBD socket to go complete around the OBD port...which is why the OP probably couldn't press the OBD socket into the port.

If the OBD diagnostic port has been pushed in...perhaps that piece highlighted in red is part of some broken support piece around the diagnostic port?
