Arrow Facebook friend requests...

A friend tagged me, and a few other former classmates that I was not FB friends with, on my HS shop teacher's obituary.

One of said former classmates then sent me a friend request, but never said a word before or after it. Am I just thinking too much or is there a reason people do this?

If you wanna catch up, cool, but you actually need to speak with me to do that. If not, then wtf?

You're just like me.

You don't understand how social media works.
It's ok, you're not alone. I'm here. Hold my hand.

Another side of this is the mistake of actually engaging in people's posts, to begin a conversation or discussion. Numerous times I've had my comments or the entire post removed with a new post saying "I don't go to people's timelines to chat, don't come to my timeline to discuss. I post my opinions here not looking to discuss them."
Silly me. I forget there's only a "like" button. "Love me please"

Honestly their whole thought process was probably this:

1. Hey it's that badass guy from HS.
2. Hey I wonder if he is on Facebook.
3. He is, I'll add him.
4. The end.

It's like making eye contact, recognizing each other and then both parties quickly look away.

But on social media.

This. Nothing more. OP you have to remember that most walking the planet these days are mindless sheep trying to build their online presence with as many "friends/followers" as possible, that's it.

Never_Enough I follow you on instagram, should I have sent a message first?

Simply put, people are curious and want to see what you are doing in your life by what you choose to post publicly. All while comparing it to theirs to hopefully make them feel better and validated their life choices.

Big disappointment there if using my FB for that. I only use it for memes, car shit & food really. I don't share my life & don't even really have photos ofmyself up there. I guess he has to settle for enjoying my Hellcat.

Only if you wanna cyber.

I stopped using IG a while back. All I did was post pics of my cars & cooking anyway, but for what? I don't care about likes.

I'm with you. Instagram seems like a soulless form of social media.

It's basically a time killer for me. On occasion I'll actually share a picture that I've taken. For the most part it's just inspirational, motivational or meme's. I follow only a few but it's usually someone I know or share similar interests with.

People use fB to measure their self popularity. They feel validated the more "friends" they have, but not more people they will ever interact with.

Guess it goes along with gotta get a photo with whatever celebrity they come across just to show all their fake internet friends. If I came across a worthwhile celeb, I'd rather have a conversation with them & pick their brain. Then get a pic after if both parties are interested.

In older times you were playing outside and see the amount of bikes at someones house to recognize how popular the friend was.
Today its the count of likes and anonymous "friends".
Whats the better score?

Same. I was taking pictures of stuff I was doing, then realized it was much easier to just enjoy it and forget about taking pictures.

LOL - damn you guys are suspicious of everything! I really don't friend request many people because I am a little rude and crude and when people say something I can always say "Well.....you asked for it - the unfriend button works just like the friend button"

But I have had people who I used to work with or went to high school with etc many decades ago who have friend requested me and I usually accept them if I know them. Why not? They can only see what I choose to put up there. Sure some might just be snooping to see what you look like now or have been up to, but there are 8-10 people I have reconnected with from decades of silence that I now hang out with on a semi regular basis because of social media. And friends that have moved thousands of miles away but I still get to keep up with them some in between phone calls. I think if it were not for social media we would lose contact all together as seeing them online makes me remember to call them and gives us stuff to talk about.

Social media is what you make it. No one can see or steal anything you don't put online - so don't put shit you don't want people to see online - seems simple to me.

I have changed a lot over the years and I am sure most of the people you all know have too, so why not? Not like you can't just block them or unfriend them if you find they are bigger assholes than you.

I'm a pretty social guy though, so I probably see it different than some. I try and see someone I will like until they open their mouths and prove otherwise...... =)
